  • Steering wheel change

Hello all, just wondering whether anyone has attempted a steering wheel change. I recently purchased a 2009 Prado (120 series) and I can't stand the feel of the steering wheel. Out of all the cars I've ever owned this one is the worst. I'm thinking that I visit an auto upholsterer and see what they can do for me. The only other alternative is to purchase a Lexus lx470 wheel with the woodgrain (looks great but lots of bucks though!!). Your thoughts appreciated.

The model is a GXL but whilst this may be ok for some it is not ok for me. The cars that I have driven have been of the sporty variety that really do just have lovely steering wheels to hold. This one just feels skinny and terrible, to me anyway. I'm assuming the one that is made by Lexus (Toyota actually) would be of better quality although if there is a cheaper alternative that someone has embraced I'm all ears.

Auto upholsterer I would think would be your best bet, playing with a steering wheel change when u have airbags involved would be big bikkies. Cheap fix is the auto shops have some good leather covers that certainly would thicken it up.

Why not just give it a bit of time to see if you get used to it? You aren't going to be driving the Prado like a sports car anyway. (Are you? 8) )

My previous drive was an E34 BMW 5 series, which had a M-Technik steering wheel. To me, that wheel was just perfect. But I have to say, I feel really comfortable using the wheel in my 07 GXL.

I do agree, it is a very individual thing..

            Re: Steering wheel change

Well I called Toyota to see whether they would fit one for me and unfortunately they were not forthcoming in providing a soultion. I should have known this but they stated that it would void the warranty and that they wouldn't do it anyway as they felt that there would be too much risk with recourse, if something did happen to go wrong. So in the interim I will go to an auto upholsterer and then when the warranty runs out look at replacing the steering wheel with the Lexus lx450 as it seems to be an exact match. Cheers Guys.
