Removing Roof Rails & Fitting ARB Rack?

I have done a search & read that somewhere there is a thread with pictures, but I can't find it!

What is the technique for removing the genuine roof rails without damaging them or the roof?

Also, is there anything to be aware of when fitting the ARB rack? I think I read somewhere that they need sealant under the feet, prior to bolting on, if so any recommended sealant? I imagine Sikaflex would glue it to the roof almost permanently.
