  • ARB Air Lockers

    Hi all,

Went out to Janowen Hills 4WD Park yesterday for a bit of a play and just could not get the traction I wanted.

Has anyone had experience with the ARB Air Lockers or got them installed on their car and can give me their thoughts or experiences with them?

Hey CHF80, i had front and rear lockers in the old 60 series and they were all they are cracked up to be. I didn't have any maintenance issues as some threads speak of. I will go with at least a rear locker in the Prado when $$$'s allow but will ask at TJM about their lockers and OL (i think) do an electronic locker. So ARB are not the be all and end all. Don't get me wrong, the 60 was kitted out by ARB with about $15,000 worth of extras and they did look after me price wise as everything was done at the same time. There are guys on the forum with lockers so you should get some more accurate info regarding the Prado specifically. I will be watching what others say as well

Front & Rears here. All good. There are a few billion (ok maybe bnot that many) posts on the pros and cons. My personal recommendation is get at least the rear. Also consider that while they may not be absolutely neceaasry each time, they DO allow you to drive slower and more safely on some obstacles thereby protecting your vehicle in a slightly different manner. eg, gung ho at full throttle bouncing the hell out of the rig to scale a hill, or slowly slowly. I knopw my option, especially when I also have the ability to get up where other cannot.

No comments on the alternatives and didn't look or they did not exist when I installed my f & R ARB lockers.

Rear Air locker here. The difference was amazing. It gives you a lot of confidence to try difficult terrain. If you want both ends locked, I think ARB are the only manufacturer of front lockers fro Prados.

This came up in the latest custom 4wd mag... (wa is already implementing this apparantly)
              problem: http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roa...01Jan_2011.pdf
The differential must not be locked either by the use of spools or welding to prevent any
difference in speed between the wheels on any axle. A proprietary part-time differential locking
device may be utilised, provided that the driver can control it from the normal seating position.

Interesting Timmay, what did the mag say? An auto locker by definition isn't permanently locked so I can't see how this would apply.

They said they rang and questioned, etc, took a long time on hold, and were told that no, they were not legal, but depending on the harshness of it locking (around corners etc)
would be up to the individual inspector at the time (or engineer, or Pit inspector in our case)
I'll find the article and scan it or something...

I thought it is normally locked and is unlocked when going around corners.

You are correct Amts but it isn't permanently locked "either by the use of spools or welding to prevent any difference in speed between the wheels on any axle". With the two methods they describe the diff is always locked.

What do they mean by 'spool'?
