  • Maxtrax roof rack mounting pin problems

The maxtrax roof rack mounting pin have a 10mm thread. ARB have a 10mm channel nut but at 8mm thick it is too wide to fit the channel of my Toyota cross bars. The channel nut I have for my Supa Peg awning is 4mm thick and fits ok.

Does anyone know where I can get a 4mm thick channel nut that takes a 10mm thread?

If they are the same size as unistrut try an electrical retailer like Haymans or Ideal or Cetnaj. I don't have Toyota bars so cannot confirm.

Yes, the channel nuts come in different sizes. I found 2 thicknesses with the M8 channel nuts but not the M10s. I think you'll find that your Supapeg awning comes with M8 fasteners.

To solve your problem, one thing I would do is find some 4mm material and tap an M10 hole in it.

Pradogang, I just spoke to Lee at Supapeg as I recently purchased an awning off him. I asked if he has those channel nuts in an M10 (he doesn't) But what he did suggest was to get a couple of their M8 channel nuts which we know fit and drill them out and re-thread to M10. I have the unistrut catalogue and they do not make M10 channel nuts in the thickness you require... so this may be your'e easiest solution. 10mm drill, M10 Tap and a bit of spit....

To tap a 10mm thread 10 x 1.5 you need to drill an 8.5mm hole not a 10mm! If you buy a tap, get a taper tap, it will be easier than a plug tap.

          Cheers Andrew

Thanks for the feedback guys. The 10mm thread on the mounting pin is too long in its present form so I will have to either cut it or use a spacer. I've just noticed on the Maxtrax website that they have a picture showing the aero type bar mounting where they drill right through the bar and use a nut underneath.

I saw that too, but I'm not keen on drilling through my bars and since I have a spare set of mounting pins, I'm going to grind off the excess length of the thread so I can mount the maxtrax directly on the bar as discussed above when I don't have my roof basket on. (I'll then use my angled brackets)

The issue with using the channel nut method and not drilling througn the aerobar is that you won't be able to orient the pins properly to match the keyhole on the Maxtrax. I don't see any issue drilling through the Aerobars but then someone can easily remove the nut and steal your Maxtrax and pins together.

I've thought a lot about this. And while a bit fiddly, you should be able to put a small nut in the channel and then the proper nyloc nut under the bars to secure them.

I put in an enquiry to the Maxtrax website and this was their answer.

                      "G'day Jim,
Most secure way to fit to Aero-type bars is to drill a hole through the centre and put a flat washer and Nylock nut underneath."

I think that's how he has his done on his Isuzu D-Max. Looks nice and neat.
