  • Water Storage

Hi, We are planning a trip to Flinders Ranges, Simpson etc for 1 mth either July 2012 or 2013 depending on what we need to be safe. A big concern is water storage for us: Mum, Dad & 3 boys. Has anyone put in water storage tanks either internal or external? - tried a search but couldn't find anything. Thanks, Wendy

    Hi wendy

Are you towing or living out of the car? If towing a camper trailer or storage trailer, jerry can's and plumbed under-body water tanks are the go. I have 80L of water tank under the camper, plus 20L either side in jerry cans if I wish. In the car I carry the odd 10L spring water cask if necessary, and I have 25L of water on the roof racks for washing recovery gear etc (or a quick shower). I wouldn't drink the water off the roof as it's stored in PVC. You should make sure that whatever option you choose, the water is suitable for drinking.

Some people on here have fitted water tanks inside the car. Given there are five of you, if you plan to live out of the car and not a trailer, you won't have much room for water after all the other necessary gear.

    Cheers
    ian.

Hi Ian, we will be living out of the car. We have an Oztent RV5 (roof rack). Our boys are 6, 8 & 9 so not huge yet but getting there... We have a cargo barrier and 50L Waeco. Space will be a minimum. thanks, Wendy

There are a couple of specific options:

And one that sits on the floor in front of the rear seats which is probably not a practical solution for you. All of these are pretty expensive compared with a couple of jerry cans and don't hold much water in any case. There are threads in other forums (fora?) where owners have plumbed 100mm PVC around the chassis but that also has significant problems. I have looked at several options over the years for our off road trailer and seem to come back to the jerry cans.

You really need to work out how much water you want to carry and go from there, at least that will remove some of the ideas but remember a jerry can is 20L and each L of water weighs 1kg plus the weight of the container.

        EDIT: couple more:

I have mounted a 48lt Boab slimline to the rear of the cargo barrier. It's only 70mm deep and fits between the Engel no problems. I also have water on the camper so we have the best of both worlds.

You may need to enlarge it to read it, very expensive I think for the amount of water it carrys BUT is out of the way and I suppose every little bit helps if you need it.......Cheers Steve

I do like the look of that one but you are right, it is VERY expensive Steve. The other thing I don't like is where the tap is mounted, not sure I'd want to drink the water from it.
