Have just picked up a bicycle flag from a mobility scooter place. It is a two piece job and when together measures 1.6 metres. This should be long enough as I plan to mount it either on the side of my awning or on a bracket on the roof bars.
Just hope that it is sufficent for the GTG 2012.

Yes we have this one too, mounted off bullbar so the flag is the first point to reach the sand dune, also don't forget to mount on drivers side so on coming traffic can get an idea were you are in relation to the centre of the track

My option is that if it is really only going to be used a couple of times and you are with a group of vehicles then I don't see an issue but if you did a lot of driving by yourself that required a flag then yes a more dedicated one would be the way to go.

                              Hi VK,

Not meaning to jump in on any official ruling on this...

FWIW, I've used an old fishing rod attached to my roof-rack, and I've seen similar setups coming toward me from afar. Bottom line for me is that they are highly visible and completely adequate, imho. Whilst the professional setup looks very schmick with cool clickey-clack connections, mine looks a bit like I do my shopping at an op-shop. Still, they do the job nicely.

In convoy, the protocol I've followed in the past is that only the lead vehicle requires a flag. The more the merrier, no doubt, but the lead vehicle must have a flag; others were optional.

                              LFaR.

My sand flag is only about a metre long and is mounted to the roof rack, so if your sand flag is a metre above your roof line than you are pretty right. Obviously the higher the better in open country but that can cause issues in the Mallee dunes with overhanging limbs and the likes.

Definately the lead vehicle needs a sand flag, but sometimes you can miss the lead vehicle in an oncoming group but see another back in the group a bit at the top of a dune, well worth everyone having a flag if possible.

                                Cheers Andrew
