A quick trick is to get an old extending fishing rod and a workers vets and some wire and make it up. I saw this tip in the latest 4wd action mag. Costs about $40.00 instead of $140
Well I have now done a trial fittment of my sand flag for the this years GTG and have to say I am pleased with how it came up. I will fit it to the drivers side when it is needed.
The flag is just one of those found on mobility scooters and is a two pices design.

I'm thinking of pipe clamping the rod to some sort of a bracket and hoping that where it gets clamped won't get crushed. Or alternatively, I'll stuff the correct size wooden dowel in there to fill up the cavity.
Thanks for all the comments, have got an old fishing rod that will be right for the job, found some old hi vis orange to make the flag as well. All will be revealed at the GTG !
Cheers
Phil
Being a keen fisho I came up with this cheap idea for an extendabe/retractable sandflag that stays up no probs. I bought a 4.1m telescopic surf rod on ebay for about $20 and a $15 4wd sandflag. I removed all the runners except the top 2, to which I tied the flag. So it extends from 60cm-4.1m and can lock securely at all heights inbetween. Being a heavy surf rod it doesn't flap around too much either. I just occy strap it to the bullbar. At Robe there were plenty of flags on fourbies, but non could match or 4.1m jobby!!! It gave us and many others a good laugh being so high!
Don't know anything about GTG but the CAMS requirement is that the flag be 3m from the ground so about 1m above the roof would be about right on most vehicles.
2009 Prado 150 D4D GXL with 265/70R17 Cooper AT/3 tyres, Max Trax, HR tow bar, Airtec snorkel, UHF and the usual recovery gear. On the list: cargo barrier, Bilstein shocks and King springs, deluxe winch bar, 10000lb winch, Lightforce 240 XGT spotlights, dual spare wheel carrier

Would love to see this and any info on where you bought it.

I bought the rod from Tuff Tackle on ebay, I was the only bidder, $24 delivered. Tuff Tackle now sell top notch stuff, but originally it was not so top notch. I am sure there would be other cheapies available. I will get you a pic when I get back from my shift next week.
The thing with telescopics is the butt cap on the bottom generally unscrews allowing them to be made, so it could be easy to attach/insert a mount or dowell like amts was thinking.
I just used a fibreglass tent pole (around $16) with part of an old safety vest as the flag. It fitted neatly in some old plumbing compression fittings I had so was easy to attach to the bull bar. Tried it out on the weekend and seemed to work OK.

Quiet day at work last saturday saw the fabrication of my sand flag for the GTG for the grand total of $3.00.
I made it up from a piece of 20mm electrical conduit, a stainless stud, flat bar, u-bolt and a cut out from a high vis vest.
Turned out pretty good but was a bit flexible at speed so i have put a 1.2m long dowel inside the conduit to keep the bottom section more rigid.
After raising the foxwing about 100mm so i dont have to duck i found the perfect place to mount it so it could remain in one piece.
We will see how long it lasts and how it performs in about 17 days at the GTG.
Cheers, Mick
