Re: Cargo barrier with rear cooler and curtain airbags

Interesting note below on the ausguard site and if you search for that part number it says for 'dual-air only' nothing about airbags...

That then begs the question, do all Grande's come with curtain airbags in the rear?
Or was this particular cargo barrier made for the pre-03 model Grande's (which I assume didn't have rear curtain airbags)?

Re: Cargo barrier with rear cooler and curtain airbags

The placard does say Grande 2003+, so it seems this is the latest cargo barrier they have designed. I did talk with the Opposite Lock owner where I picked up the cargo barrier from (PM for details) to make absolute certain that the cargo barrier did suit both rear air conditioning and side airbags. He said that he installs them into Grandes with airbags all the time.

I am only going of his recommendation and what the website says. But I will say that it suits me better than the other brand as my dogs dont get any choice in determining whether they stay in the rear of the Prado or are back seat passengers.

We are thinking of one for camping trips to safely carry extra gear but removing it for around town with the 3rd row seats fitted. Thanks.

Will do. The barrier is easy enough to remove/install when needed. We do this all the time, depending on what we are doing. When not in use, the barrier just rests against our garage wall. Will post pics as soon as I can.

Mate, I don't have the cargo barrier fitted at the moment. As soon as I do, I will post the dimensions... unless someone else already knows this information?

Re: Cargo barrier with rear cooler and curtain airbags

I'm posting here just for anyone who stumbles across this problem...

The standard Milford barrier (Non-airbag, no cut outs on the sides) WILL fit in models with rear air con only (no rear air bags). Contrary to Milfords installation instructions and advice from 4x4 centres.

For what reason they say it doesn't fit I don't know. I have one fitted in my rig and the only thing I can think of is that it partially covers an outlet vent on each side... Which is no biggie at all.

                      Cheers,

                      Crammy

Re: Cargo barrier with rear cooler and curtain airbags

                            Hi all,

I have been reading these posts with interest, as I have just installed 2 Milford cargo barriers last week, in my own, and my mates 2008 Prado GXL's, both with the curtain airbags.(My former job was an Auto Electrician and we also were a Milford Barrier agent)
What bothers me is people doing there own thing regarding where to fit mounting points, because this could render the barrier useless in the event of a severe collision!
These barriers regardless of brand, have been tested to perform at an optimum, fitted to the MANUFACTURERS SPECIFICATIONS, so if you don't know how to install it properly, get someone that does. :x

You have already spent big money to buy a vehicle with all the latest safety features, so why go second rate in this area!
Incidently, I would be concerned with the Ausbarrier that seems to fit quite close around the sides of the Prado for it's airbag compatability, as not only do Milford's have a large cutout, but other barriers that are compatable also have the large cutout.
It is with experience with my current fulltime job, that the curtain airbags would use all that cutout space to deploy properly, and if restricted, may interfere with the protection of the second row occupants.

Anyhow, that's my 5 cents worth!

                            Cheers, Mat

As per my last post, my Ausguard barrier does have the cutouts for the side airbags to deploy. When mine was fitted originally they installed the GX/GXL 'non airbag' model. After pointing this out they then developed a PROTOTYPE (with cutouts for airbags), I assume based on the Milford barrier.

The engineer went to great lengths to point out that both Milford and Ausguard barriers for the 'rear airbag models' were NON COMPLIANT with the Australian regulations. I was also told, by the same engineer, that TOYOTA must supply the Australian compliant specifications to make these barriers acceptable.

At the time my barrier was manufactured (about 10 months ago) this was not available.

Make you own inquires as things may have move on since then. Obviously, this was just a few conversations between myself and the Ausguard engineer so you must make your own enquires before making a decision.

                              Hope this helps.

Confirming Crammy's post - and a bit more info - the spec book lists either a GXL, or, GXL with side airbags/rear air con - which leads anyone with rear air con (even if they don't have side airbags) to get the second model - which is with the big cutouts. I have just swapped mine for the first model which fits exactly the same around the roof space, but doesn't have the big cutouts. The spec book is misleading in this respect..
