  • Genuine Toyota tow bar

As i have just purchased a prado without a tow bar i decided to get the genuine toyota bar and fit it myself.

Just whacked it on tonight, prob took hour 1/2, but i noticed with the tung in it rattle's, and that is just in the shed. Has anyone else noticed this, i was thinking of drilling and tapping a bolt into it with a lock nut so i can clamp the tung against the outter.

Commodore towbars come with this and seems to work really well.

    Any ideas

    Cheers Rhys

I would put up with it, you probably won't hear it. I have had tongue style towbars in the past and never heard any rattle. If you can hear it, remove the tongue.

I would not modify it in any way. If you modify it and it causes and accident you will not have a leg to stand on due to unengineered modification of plant.

There was a bit of rattle in mine when I got it ... and I'm probably a bit anal about erradicating odd little noises .... so I put a little dob of grease in with the tongue ... no more noise

      Cheers

Just run a couple of rounds of electrical tap around it and jam it in, works a treat costs nothing.

I only ever have my tongue in when I tow so I never hear a rattle.
Its always been my policy to remove the tongue after use, especially if going off-road. I have seen guys hung up on tow balls before. They get a bit red faced, cameras clicking..... ops:

I use a socket and ring spanner and nip up the securing bolt, stops the rattle as the bolt slightly compresses the steel outer casting, the tongue is normally left off as the Lab hates jumping in the back with it in place.

                  Hey ppl,

Thanks for your reply's i think i will just leave it, i towed a car trailer 200km's last night and it hardly made a noise.
I wasn't real keen on drilling a hole just thought of the idea after seeing it on my old commodore tow kit.

As for the price, $200 from ebay, for a genuine toyota kit, never been out of the box and then $50 for a wiring loom from the local toyota dealer. Installation pics? I have none i did it by myself, was in a hurry and just had enough time to do the install and drink beers  [/quote]
