I bought the last one off the Ambulance station which was a hassle in itself.
At first I was told they would have to order it in.
3 hours later they said it was ready.
When I arrived I opened the kit and inspected to find the items were not all there, secondly some of the lotions and potions were out of date. I refused to leave until it was sorted out - much to thier dismay.
They were totally disorganised, but did eventually get the kit sorted.

      I carry out these additional extra items ;

A- Burn Cream (avoid using pressure units as they might heat up during summer)
B- Antiseptic Cream , Bite Cream
      C- Eye Wash Solution
D- Heave Gloves (To Touch Hot Surfaces)
      E- Safety Glasses
      F- All purpose Fire Extinguisher

I have one but its quite old and needs renewing.

Whilst i was in the local shopping centre i was talking to the ST Johns Ambulance lady and asked her about traveling extreme outback like the Canning stock route.
I was mainly interested in snake and spider bites and she told me that they do hire a kit for these bites and it has a sat phone which you call them before using any antivenin which i thought was pretty cool.

I intend doing a first aid coarse and taking my wife as well.
Does anyone know how long they take and how much they cost.

I do not know the answer for sure but their website lists the different course available:

          http://www.stjohn.org.au/

Look under the training tab, the remote area first aid course would be the one to do I would think:

          "Remote Area First Aid
This course is designed to meet the first aid needs of bushwalkers, climbers, canyoners, cavers, 4WD enthusiasts, outdoor/adventure instructors, wilderness guides, scout leaders or people who work and live in remote locations. This qualification remains current for three years, during which time a recertification course must be completed"

bottle of rum, and 3 bandaids.. 8)

all you will ever need imo..

seriously tho. I have a well stocked first aid kit.. My wife has done quite a few first aid courses (high school teacher, needed when you take students on trips ect) and i have done quite a fair bit of first aid stuff while growing up in scouts/venturers/rovers.

We also carry a few books for reference incase confronted with something serious.

I have been asked to do some research into the St Johns courses by the manager here at work so I can now tell you the costs of the course which are:

Senior First Aid Course - $150.00 and takes two days to complete or one day if you do the CD-ROM section at home.

Senior First Aid Refresher Course - $95.00 can only be done once between two full Senior First Aid Courses.

Remote Area First Aid Course - $239.00 and is two days in length

Junior First Aid Course - $85.00 and is a one day course. suitable for young people aged 9 to 13 years.

Advanced First Aid Course - $104.00 and 1 day in length

Occupational First Aid Course - $541.50 and is 5 days in length

The above are probably the ones that we all would be interested in.

I think you will have to do resus at least every year to keep the first aid certificate current.

or you could all do your bit for your local area and join the SES and do a top course through them for nothing except a few hours a week helping out others in need.
Depending on where you are they also do some other great courses too, abseiling, chainsaw operations umm you can get real proficient at tarping roofs and chopping up cars.
We were members of the VRA and SES when we lived in NSW, the course we did then for accreditation was harder in some respects to the St Johns but well worth the time and effort.
Generally too you'll find members are a great bunch of people.

I've finally just sorted out my First Aid Kit.

Like Pradogxlv6 (Matt) my missus is a nurse so I dind't have to spend lots of money

I just sourced all the essentials and threw them into a spare little black knapsack I had laying around. To make sure the kids and anybody else knew it was the First Aid Kit I bought this patch on eBay from America. Delivered to my door for under $5.00 :P

It seems everytime we go camping 4WDing atleast one person in the group gets a cut or a burn or walks through stinging nettles or something, so I always throw the First Aid kit in :P

P.S. Mansour, without meaning to sound like a smart-arse, I don't think you are supposed to apply "burn creams" these days? Just immerse the area in cold water for 10-15 minutes and apply a dressing if required after that?

mansour, bloody ell, if you had no water I'm sure "burn cream" would feel like liquid heaven

As for fire extinguishers blowing up in a vehicle I have never heard of that one.

According to St Johns the certification lasts for a period of 3 years.
Senior First Aid is refreshed every 3 years. CPR\Resus every 12 months. This is standard\required practice for workplace first aiders.

For a non occupational\workplace situation certification is not strictly required. What is required is a good knowledge of first aid technique and procedures.

Beyond the workplace, there are a few legal issues that relate to duty of care (once first aid is commenced), consent (for a conscious patient, with an unconscious patient it is implied) and what you can do within the limits of your certification\qualifications (such as epi-pens, drugs etc).

A decent first aid course given by trained professionals will cover off any legal issues and equip you with even the most basic life support skills. Each year I do the QAS Advanced Resus and AED course (basically CPR with Oxygen and Semi-Auto Defib) and every three years do the advanced first aid. It is amazing what changes or what you forget in even 12 months.

For the most part, the most essential training is CPR. When medical help is very close by this will sustain life. When you get further away from help you need to look at containing serious blood loss and other life threatening, secondary issues. When you are hours away from help, you need to know more about clinical care, sustained life support and hygiene issues.

Your kits, equipment and training should reflect your potential time to professional medical assistance.

Just thought I would share something that shows how important it is to be equiped with the knowledge and equipment to deal with emergency situations when they happen.

My son, Chris has just completed his senior first aid course and as he and another chap on the course were driving home after the first day they were flagged down by 2 very distressed teenagers. When asked if they could help, they went inside to be confronted with a number of very drunk and stoned teenagers who were having a party whilst parents were at work. They found one 15 year old unconscious on the floor and choking in her own vomit and another unconscious and not breathing, with 2 people holding her up trying to revive her in the shower with cold water.

None of the idiots had even thought about calling an ambulance so once Chris and his mate had revived and stabilized the girls an Ambulance was called. We are unsure what the final outcome was, but it is certain that without the actions of Chris and his mate it would have been a very tragic ending to what started out as a bit of fun.
