Not sure prado2004 but Im sure it was only the later model prados eg 07 upwards (one with duel air standard on the GXL like D4D's) that has the cable standard for the camera ?? Mine is an 05 and I cant see any extra looms for a camera, although in saying that my head unit when I pulled it out did have the extra cable for the GPS unit (for the grande) just dangling there behind so maybe Im looking in the wrong spot for the camera loom ?? Cheers Steve

I could keep it in the centre console and pull it out when I want to use it but thats a pain.

I imagine that running the cabling all the way down from the rear view mirror camera kits would be a pain in the ass!
I'm toying with this idea. Two in one- dash cam and rear view. There is an iOS /android app that let's you view over wifi. The Dashcam creates it's own wifi hotspot. I've already got a no hole dash mount and iPhone. The only downside is you'd have to wait for the unit to power up and create a wifi connection before the app picks it up, also viewing angle might not be great. . Benefit is it can be on when in forward motion so you can keep an eye on load. (Which might not be strictly legal but I'm not sure)

picked up one of these this morning, going to mount it in the prado. Couldn't say no for $58 for a camera and screen, cheaper than ebay!

Will let you all know how it goes, i figured if its crap, I'll take it back. Its got two camera inputs so another camera can be added later if necessary if someone wanted one on their caravan or something.

prado2004, I just went down and grabbed one as well. If I get time tomorrow I will try and fit it up and see how it goes. Not sure where I'm going to mount the screen. It comes with some Velcro for attachment.....Will work that out first before I go any further with it....Cheers Steve

I rigged it up last night, all I can say is im impressed with the quality of the camera and screen for the price. I was thinking of fixing it off via 1 or 2 small screws off the the a pillar to the right of the windscreen, this way its out of the way and nice and visible. Mine didn't come with velcro but had 3m tape, however it will just fall off after time. I bent my camera bracket so I can mount it just above the tow bar, and I tapped into the reverse light under the plastic cover inside the rear door. Will put some pics up this weekend of the install if it helps out. So far I've wired the camera and monitor up to reverse wire and earth, and when reverse is selected the monitor turns on, move out of reverse and it turns off. Great little unit.

Thanks for that, never thought of mounting it off to the side. I did a quick connection direct to the battery last night just to see the image quality. Seemed ok to me as well. Yes don't think the 3m tape will hold for too long but I do have some Velcro stuff laying around so might try that. Did you run all the wires through the vehicle itself ?? Spewing I never thought of it when I ran the wiring for the fridge !!! anyway looks like the trims coming off again now to run camera wiring. Plastic cover ?? presume you mean rear 1/4 panel ones. I was thinking of mounting the camera above number plate but Im sure some one said its a mongrel job getting that trim off and getting to the plastic panel the number plate screws to then having to run the wiring through the rubber tube where all the other wires run lol fun begins........Cheers Steve

Yeah I'm actually thinking of just drilling a hole above the number plate in the bumper, just big enough to run cabling through. Then there is a rubber grommet on the rear right of the car which leads into the rear quarter panel so I have come up through there, tapped into reverse wire under cover just inside the back of the car (red wire with black stripe) and then I will run it to the front of the vehicle inside all the way to the right hand side under the panels.

I know what you mean, I wish I thought of it when I ran all the additional cabling to the back for my fridge, at least there is no pulling apart of the dash, the panels all pull off easily. To access the reverse wire just remove the 6 screws holding the panel in place.

I thought for a while about where to mount the screen but I think the a pillar to the right of the steering wheel is the most inconspicuous spot whilst not being in the way of knees and also easily visible. Ive already got a UHF under ashtray and brake controller under steering wheel so those spots are gone.

The other option is just keep it inside your centre console and have it so you open the lid to view it if you dont want to fix it off anywhere, however I have that many holes inside my car, whats a few more right?

I actually blew a fuse by allowing the reversing wire to touch the earth wire and lost indicators and reverse lights. Looked at fuse names and was scratching my head as hazards worked but no indicators or reverse light. So started one by one and it was actually Igntion 2 fuse that was blown inside the drivers kick panel. 10 amp mini blade fuse. So if anyone does this, it will be the culprit! Would never have guessed the IGN 2 fuse would make reverse lights and indicators stop working...

Camera install done. Very impressed with the picture quality and for the price is well worth it. I can see when reversing to hook up to a trailer to the point of stopping when just about to tap the towbar and in line. [IMG][/IMG] Im going to get a little shild made up just to protect it a bit (stop any thing dropping down on it) [IMG][/IMG] I ran some of that protective shielding over the single wire to the camera. [IMG][/IMG] I come out from here which is on the drivers side quarter looking up from underneath (its the cleaner one of the two)[/IMG] The picture is actually clearer then it appears. My phone camera has made it look a bit grainy but it is clearer. You can see the top of the towball at bottom of picture........Cheers Steve

Mounted camera here down on the console, I have the dash cam plugged into the 12V outlet behind it so don't need to access behind it. I found the adhesive that was on it so far seems to be extremely strong. Time will tell, if it comes away I will use some Velcro.... [IMG][/IMG] Cheers Steve
