  • Air Jack - aka Exhaust Jack

Busy playing with all my new toys, it came time to give the air jack a test. Crikey, for just a moment, I felt I was about to tip the new Prado onto its side...

I found a few small challenges though eventually met with success.

Video of exhaust jack tipping my new Prado. This was about my 5th attempt.
    • The first challenge was finding the best lifting point. With the side-steps, there are many sharp edges that needed to be avoided.[/*:m:2zmbu7bn]
    • Adjusting the air bag so it did not deform too much during the lift required more fiddling than I expected.[/*:m:2zmbu7bn]
    • Once the vehicle started lifting, the effort was too great for engine idle speed. At idle, the engined choked and stopped once the car started lifting. I needed my son to jump into the drivers seat (to his great delight) and increase the revs enough to inflate the bag.[/*:m:2zmbu7bn]
    • The connector that fits over the exhaust is not an easy snug fit. Instead, it required a bit of fiddling to get it set at just the right angle. Also as the bag started lifting, it required considerable more effort to keep it in place.[/*:m:2zmbu7bn]
    • I used some heavy cardboard to provide a little more protection against sharp edges under the car and pavement.[/*:m:2zmbu7bn]

    Finally, some fun pics:

This is lifted much higher than is needed.

There is still more lifting range in this air bag, which may be needed when bogged in deep soft sand.

The airbag is under considerable strain, but manages to hold the beast.

There are many sharp edges and not too many safe lifting points.

few years ago I did a 4wd training w/end and the trainers couldn't wait to do exactly the same thing to my prado. We deliberately bogged it in the sand then stuck the bag under the petrol tank and lifted her up.

They used a few old carpet squares to protect the bag, top and bottom, seemed thicker than the cardboard and mats that come in the kit. Also they had one person who guided the bag while the other held the exhaust end on while I got the easy job to keep the revs up. They also had it further under the car away from the steps and edges.

Good fun to watch hanging in the air and suprisingly take quite a load.

I'm not sure what the quality is like, i'm very cautious about buying unknowns off ebay, but you can get them for about $180, has anyone tried one? i know they go for up to like 380 in the shops...

Good stuff! Thanks for sharing that. And the fuel tank offers the largest flattest surface - seemingly ideal for lifting. I had just one reservation... the instructions in the kit were explicit about not using the fuel tank as a lifting point, so I avoided it. I wondered whether that included the Prado's protected tank, but I didn't want to take too many risks.

I presume the warning to not use the tank is due to the risk of denting it. Is the Prado's tank protection built strong enough to take the weight of the vehicle? I am guessing the answer will be yes, but I don't like guessing at these types of questions

Great tips! Thanks AJ. I'm adding carpet squares to my recovery gear.

I was hoping for a one-person lift, though if I have 3 people, then that would be ideal. I wonder if it's possible to temporarily increase the engine revs with some kind of idle-adjustment on the Prado. My father suggested a brick on the accelerator would work . I won't tell you how he in his youth, he used his suitcase to apply pressure to the accelerator whilst he got out and pushed his Morris out of a bog...

You read my expression perfectly . There was just that fleeting moment where I thought "uh oh". After realising the danger had passed, I was all smiles. :P
