Guys, I take delivery of my new GXL in a few weeks & I would like to investigate the possibility of fitting a sunroof, something like this one (costs $2,700). As I've never had a sunroof I'd appreciate some feedback, positive or negative, from anyone who has gone the aftermarket route or from Grande owners already fortunate enough to have one.

My advice would be dont do it.
They are never as good as a factory job. Its just too difficult to get a good fitment and they often have issues.
As well as the fact you would be letting some one with no formal qualifications and possibly little experience take to your new $60000 vehicle with an angle grinder...
I have had nothing but bad experiences with aftermarket sunroofs in various vehicles.2003 V6 GXL, Mickey Thompson MTZ's, Safari Snorkel, ARB Winch Bar, OME Suspension 2" lift, GME TX3420

I have a mate that's got a pop-up style one in his hi-lux. It has now been in for 2-3 years. He loves it and has not had any problems, and yes, he does take his lux off road. I guess it is one of those things where sometimes you can be lucky and sometimes not. Being aftermarket you don't have the benefit of a 3 year factory warranty but that doesn't necessarily mean the job won't be done properly the first time.

Thanks guys. Here in Adelaide Roof Rack City have an excellent, long term reputation for fitting sunroofs so I'm not that concerned by possible poor fitment issues, more the facts of will it get used, value for money etc. As I said I've never owned a vehicle with a sunroof & I test drove a Grande & loved the sunroof, I just want to make sure it's not a "fad" & that I'll get sick of it.2008 Prado GXL V6 Silver Ash

An awesome brand the Hollandia, I've seen Prestige Sunroof here in Perth actually install this into an Alfa Romeo. Anyway I know they actually weld the sunroof into the exisiting roof and re-line the entire ceiling of your car. Being welded hopefully you won't loose to much body strength, however since the Prado is a shell on a chasis it shouldn't be much of an issue. The sun roof actually has proper drainage lines that drain down the sides of the car just behind the front wheel arch. I'm thinking the same thing ChrisD and have been looking at these Hollandia's for a few years now, was going to get one for the WRX.

As Damien said a factory one is the best but they don't have a factory one for a GXL...Damn it! So I'll will be getting one of these when the Prado arrives later this month...Fingers crossed.
Good Luck.

I wanted to get one in my current STI but apparently they have a structural cross member that runs across the roof which needs to be cut to fit a sunroof.
I too was impressed by the Hollandia, I've pretty much decided I'm getting one, let me know when you get your's. Only negative is that they want your car for 2-3 days.2008 Prado GXL V6 Silver Ash

I agree with you Addy, we had a factory sun roof on the rav 4 and after the novelty were's off you don't use it, especially in queensland as all that ends up happening is that you get sun burnt on one side of your body.

One dealer said if I decided to go that way, then I would have the only GXL sunroof Prado in Australia. Anyway, decided against it in the end. So if you are interested in a sunroof on a GXL, and your in the market for a new Prado - ask the dealer - you may be surprised at a cost    $3000SSSHHHH be very very quiet were huntin wabbits.

Webasto which are a european made sunroof company used to be in my factory complex, now they have moved to a larger premises. All the local dealers sent their cars there that didn't come from factory with a sunroof.
On any given day I would see FPV Fords, WRXs, and heaps of Jeeps. They replaced the the entire headlining and the finish was to the same Quality as you would expect from factory. They are apparently OEM supplier for alot of euro cars Factory sunroofs.
Like factory sunroofs they are designed to allow the water to go past the seal and run down tubes in the A and C pillars. They had a jig for each model of vehicle and I never heard an angle grinder.
All I can say is if you get an aftermarket sunroof expect to pay over $2000 or you get what you pay for.
