  • Question for US readers

I've noticed on some of the US based sites I've looked at that some of you guys are using thick plastic skid/bash plates.

Here's an example of what I mean:

How effective is this set up compared to steel plates?
I'm guessing it's High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)? or similar?

First decent rock slide would tear it or stretch it.

It was used years ago in rallying, everyone has gone to alloy now, much more resilient.

That is High Density PolyEthylene (HDPE). We have a Bruiser that put them on his 4-Runner. They are being used on race trucks to keep weight down. It is a fraction of the cost of metal bash plates. Another alternative is Rasta Aluminum bash plates. Rasta.com

Here is the thread that starts with asking what it is, and finishes with all the compliments of a well fabricated set of skids. HDPE Skids

      Hope I helped,

          Re: Question for US readers

          Mick,

Russ, a Bruiser member, just finished his set of HDPE skids. He did them a little different than Croz.

Here ia a link to the thread...http://www.fjbruisers.org/forum/index.php?topic=2033.0

Feel free to sign up for the forum and ask Russ questions. He is some kind of composite matirials engineer and even made a Bull Bar & winch nount using carbon fiber......and it worked.

          Good luck on your skids.

            Re: Question for US readers

Would it be more of a 'short term' light weight comp set up... ie. lighter but needing replacement after each (or a few) comps.

We have had several on another forum that have been wheeling with them for several years without any damage to skids or vehicle.
