  • Anyone have any info on the AN477 Antenna pack?

    Have just nabbed a GME TX-4200 off ebay for a nice price, now need an antenna.

    We dont have a bull-bar, so looking to get one of the brackets to place the antenna off the edge of the bonnet, probably passenger side near window.

    Checked out the Lake Macquarie Communications website - does anyone have any info on the AN477 Antenna pack?

    http://www.lakecomm.com.au/uhfant&acc.html#an477

    The AN477 pack is an Independent Ground Plane antenna and is a complete kit for all applications, kit includes;

    * Spring Base - Heavy Duty
    * 6.5db gain Whip - Perfect for long range comms
    * 2db gain Whip- Ideal for mountainous country
    * 4.5m RG58CU Coax Cable and Plug
    * As Inlcuded in Icom 400PRO SUPER PACK
    * Code 'B'

    Thanks.

    Hi sleekr,

    I looked at the kit, looks good, but due to the weight of the spring base antenna, it looks like it should be mounted to a bull bar or something solid, the RFI CD50 on your link is a very good antenna, we use its brother the CD51 on mine sites all over the world & get very good performance from them & being flexable they are just about indestructable, we have tried many different antennas mounted to Dozers, Excavators, 4wd's etc & found that they have been the only light weight UHF antenna that we have tried that hasnt broken, the machines we fit them to work off road up to 24hrs a day 7 days a week, they are very easy to fit & terminate with out any special tools, they are also cheap, From memory they retail around the $35 mark

    For a bonnet mount antenna you want the lightest antenna you can find & my pick is the RFI CD51, all the esential services use them as well.

    Sorry if it sounds like a sales pitch but I dont work for RFI, I just love these little antennas & fit up to a 100 of them a year on mine sites with work.

      Gday Sleekr,
      I use a GME antenna & don't have a bullbar. I just drilled a hole in the bumper bar. Pics follow. Yetiboy is right about big ones shaking off bonnet mounts. If you do go a bonnet mount, then make sure you pick up existing screws in the car, don't just go the self-tapper routine (often done by installation "technicians") or it'll rattle loose in no time. Roof mount is also a good idea unless you use underground carparks...

          I just recently installed (last week) a GME TX3420. I don't have a bullbar so opted to mount the antenna on a roof rack base. since I wanted the bracket raised from the paint work. I used an MB404ss and bent the end over but in hindsite probably should have just got a MB407ss. Since getting the MB404ss I have gone out and bought a custom made bracket from Electric Bug in Adelaide which suits the 100 and 120 series for roof mounted antennas. The antenna I settled on was an AE4005 but it is slightly too tall to drive into the carport so also have a short stubby thing to protect the UHF from the kids playing around.

          I can post some pictures if you want to see how I installed this.

            Thanks all.

            I'm in Brisbane - have updated profile.

            Unfortunately, we dont have roof-racks (as yet), and when I occasionally drive to work, the carpark is very low, so would want the antenna to only protrude just above to roof, or be able to bend and whip back without breaking.

            We'd probably only be using the CB whilst in groups (eg Mt Mee days, or the Simpson crossing planned next year), but having said that, who knows, maybe we'll get to like using it all the time!

            The bonnet mount still seems best to me - can grab one of the brackets from DSE, use an existing bolt to fit it. Just need to make sure I get the appropriate antenna, so yetiboy's comments about weight are helpful.

            Any other suggestions for antennas?

            Thanks

                I'll get to it whern I have time. Maybe over the weekend but this one is going to be busy, and then there is work work to do at home (big project till then end of the year) and plenty of footy and beer to relax with.

                  I decided to go the SS whip option. We also use RFI at work and as yetiboy01 said they seem to be the most robust.
                  http://www.rfi.com.au/downloads/wire...7MHz/CD900.pdf I went the bigger option as I have a bullbar. The other thing I like is the it uses a FME connector and adaptor, the advantage of this is the FME is not muck thicker than the cable, so that way you can feed the connector through grommets, so no terminating!!!

                  This is a link to their UHF CB antennas

                      If you wish to communicate on marine frequencies, you will need a marine radio (VHF 27MHz).

                      Otherwise on land, its UHF 477MHz.
