  • Cable access through firewall

Just about to install a aerial for my new Uniden UHF radio. Can anyone suggest the best/easiest place to punch a hole through the firewall into the cabin. Prefer exiting hole if possible. Any pics appreciated.

    Re: Cable access through firewall

I have my UHF aerial on the left side of the bullbar, so I ran the UHF cable along the left side (passenger) of the engine bay. Just follow the wiring loom to the firewall and you will see a large grommet where it enters the firewall. Either push it through (best not have the connector on it) along side the cables or cut a new hole and silastic it up when you have finished. Make sure you have disconnected the battery as there is a lot of exposed electrical connectors on the other side of the firewall. Take the kick panel off from under the glovebox or better still remove the glovebox.

    Regards

Thanks Gary. I just finished installing the aerial on the Prado and found the spot you mentioned.

For the benefit of others there is a rubber grommit with cabling running through it on the far left side of the firewall (passenger side). There are a couple of small "nipples" :P on the edges of this rubber grommit. I just snipped one off  and slipped the aerial cable straight through into the cabin behind the glovebox. Nice tight fit.

Yep I was going to suggest the nipple removal, nick named a " nipple ectomy" on Hiluxs and Prados in our workshop :?

          Hi Hoppy 50,
Sorry I am a bit late with this post, I also used the "Nipple Ectomy" method through the offside passengers rubber grommet can't offer pics as that area is to crowded with other mods wiring looms.
Definitely remove the glove box and passenger foot well kick panel, keep the Antenna wiring run well clear of the main ECU, run it over the top and over to the centre consul. Have fun, let us know if you have problems many of us have fitted UHF's in various positions and can help.

I've bought some spotlights and will attempt to install them myself. I'd like to know how people are punching through the grommet on the firewall at the driver's side since I will be installing the spotlight switch on the right hand side switch cluster near the mirror adjustment? Didn't see any nipples on that grommet. Any handy tips would be really helpful.

Just push through the grommet with a stiff wire, somewhere away from the existing wires. ( I use a bit of no. 8 fencing wire ) It will make it's own hole. If you tape the wires you want to pull through to the back of the wire, you can them pull it through from the driver's side and the hole will close itself around the wires. You can put a bit of black butyl-mastic around it to be sure of a seal.
              Cheers, Wayne

amts, you should not need to remove the dash. You can see the grommet from the indide and there is plenty of accessible area. If you are looking at putting the switch on the panel with the blank switches on the right of the steering wheel then you can get your hand in the back and it basically just pushes out.

Excellent! Thanks Nick. Obviously, I haven't been doing enough initial practical research, instead letting my fingers do the walking on PP. ops:

                      Re: Cable access through firewall

If you remove RHS kick panel in the direver footwell, it makes it easier to access the firewall grommet from the inside. To remove the kick panel, take off the bottom door trim ( pulls off ) then undo the thumbscrew near the firewall.
                      Cheers, Wayne
