    Re: Question about bull bar

The Ironman bars are probably fine. The ARB are more betterer. Depends what you want them for really, and we all seem to see something different.

Personally, I was never going to put anything heavy on the front. But after reading PP, doing a 4WD driving course and having a talk with the instructors a couple of very good reasons became clear. Firstly, there is the approach angle issue, then there is the wildlife impact issue, and lastly, and for me most importantly, is the fact that I will be taking the car to remote places and will also at times be on my own or at least be the only vehicle. The bar is there to allow me the best chance to return under my own steam by protecting the radiator. It's that simple.

That's the idea, protection, for me, for the car, the enviroment, and not so much for the chickens who across the road

There's some store who sels ARB in internet in Australia?
Or it's like Brazil, where we can buy only in a distributor?

      Thanks man

photoprado - I'm pretty new to the Prado, and I know this may get some going but... Is the bar that much of a protection for the car?
It is designed to crumple to allow the air-bags to be set off in a crash? Wouldn't it then crumple the front as well?

        Cheers Greg

          Re: Question about bull bar

No ARB and no Ironman.
I decided to buy a custom-made bumper in São Paulo, by 4WDBrasil (www.4wdbrasil.com.br)
Was cool, compact, good angle and winch mount inside, some pictures.
Ned some upgrades, like protect better the radiator and window water recipient and need to make some protection for the lights too.
I have all 2010 to do this now

          And installing the winch:

I really ned to create a topic in "my rig build up" ops:

            Hey Greg,

            Sorry, missed this question.

You are 100% correct for the urban environment. The bar becomes part of the problem, especially for other road users. If I was only driving around urban environments I wouldn't have one for that reason.

Airbags are activated by sensors in the vehicle, so as long as those sensors continue to operate the bars should have no effect on the airbag operation. The common bars are all airbag compatible, so they should work as designed in an accident.

As far as protection for the car, I'm concerned about minor prangs and animal strikes in the bush, not so much other vehicles or city traffic. As long as the bar protects the radiator, there is every chance the vehicle will still be drivable, even if the bar itself moves and crumples the odd panel.

              jeisonk,

That bar looks excellent! It could be a factory bar, it's so well integrated with the car.

Do you have specifications - what does it weigh?

Michael, I don't have detailed specifications because it's the only one that 4WD Brasil made, but the weight is around 32-33kg.

If you need some especific detail I can measure for you or take a picture or something else, just tell me what you need.

Mate I am guessing this price is non winch, not colour coded and ex GST because the best I have seen in Brisbane from ARB and its dealers is $2200 Inc GST for a Colour coded Deluxe winch bar fitted.
