  • Water storage. Removable or fixed??

Searched and found a few different ideas for water storage mainly in the rear drawer systems thread. Most of these involved DIY tanks etc.
I am at the stage where I need a solution to carry a reasonable amount of water for desert trips. Im now starting to lean towards some sort of bladder unless I can find a hard container solution that fits neatly under the "Lifestyle Rack" in the back.

Just wondering how others carry their portable, potable water?
Are jerry cans, plastic or otherwise, an issue when it comes to "sloshing water" sounds etc"?

10l water boxes from Coles and Woolworths are great along with a couple of 20l jerry cans depending upon how much water is required. We are going across the Simpson in August and will have 40l of water in jerry cans and then another 40l in 10l boxes. The beauty of these is they give back space after use.

I had the same idea about the woolies water containers. Might take one 20L jerry and a few of the disposable woolies containers. Just the two of us traveling and not crossing the Simmo.......

      Thanks for the tip.

Re: Water storage. Removable or fixed??

We find the jerry cans more convenient as after arriving at a camp site they can be taken out of the car and put near the tent/kitchen area.
I won't buy the thin plastic ones you see in most camping places. We've had these split ( not good if you need the water, not to mention the mess in the car !). There are heavy duty plastic ones available ( places like Buninngs stock them ).

Our rear storage unit ( home made ) has a deep "slot" the width and height of a 20l jerry can, that will fit 2 cans upright, one in front of the other ( The Prado loadspace has enough depth for this ).

I strongly suggest do not use the plastic taps that go on the bottom ( disaster waiting to happen ). We have a caravan style hand pump that screws onto the top pourer hole. ( how this is fitted to the top depends on the style of can ). This allows water to be pumped out while the jerry can is still in the vehicle, and when out of the vehicle you don't need to elevate or tip it to get your water. For travelling, the hand pump and tube can be removed, and the normal cap fitted back on.
        Cheers, Wayne

excellent idea! I just lift the jerry to pour, but MrsFishnut has taken the rig to the GTG and although she is tough, she wasn't keen on having to lift a 20L jerry everytime she wanted to fill the kettle or wash hands. This would have solved it.

Here's a pic of my set up for screw on lid type drums:

Any good camping store will sell pumps and spare lids and the oly other thing you need is a hole saw.

Thanks for posting that Mick ( I am cameraless ) I found it needed a small hole drilled in the cap to allow air to enter and equalise the pressure. Obviously a tube extending to the bottom of the jerry can is also needed. ( you can get 13mm food grade clear tube from Bunnings or Clarke rubber, although I just have irrigation hose on mine at the moment :? ). You could go real fancy and put a filter at the bottom.

Some cans have a smaller diameter spout, ( like our new ones ) in which case I just jam the pump's threaded section in the hole. Friction holds it tight enough to operate the pump.

Ray's Outdoors used to sell the pumps but don't seem to anymore - may need to go to a caravan accessories place.

fishnut, I'm going to start a rig build up thread soon, and I'll post pics of the storage unit in there.

                Good point.

I got the pump and lid from Ray's Outdoors about 6 months ago... lid was a couple of dollars and the pump around $25 from memory.

This style of cap fits 30lt water cubes and the Willow style 10 and 20 litre jerry cans.

Dont know if this will be helpful, but have you seen the new BCF catalogue, they have 59 litre plastic tanks for about $70. I can't make out the exact measurements though.

                    See: http://www.bcf.com.au/index.aspx?path=c ... &curpage=2

We carry over 150L onboard our camper trailer (2 x tanks) but also carry 2 x 20L jerry cans - as these are removable. So we have a foot each side of the fence, I guess :?
