  • ARB Sahara Bar query, High Lift jack points

    G'Day All

I've noticed on other threads that the Sahara bar seems to lack high lift jack points. The photos here http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic....9&hilit=sahara certainly don't show any however the images in the ARB catalogue show them on both the Hilux & Navara examples.

In checking out the bar at ARB last week I was told by the sales guy that they don't fit the jack points to the Sahara as they consider it's not a full bullbar & if one was going to get into 4WD places that they'd be needed then ARB would expect you would select a full bar, not the Sahara. Couldn't explain, however, why they provide the facility for a winch on the Sahara bar!

The lack of HL points seems a bit remiss to me as I would have thought that you'd get much more use out of a high lift jack, even if it's just changing a tyre in the sand, than a winch unless you are going to 'extreme' 4WD places, which was the inference from the ARB bloke.

Question is this - is it possible to get a Sahara bar either made with said lift points as a special order or have the points cut into such a bar?

Can anyone with an ARB Deluxe or Commercial bar, with HL points, advise if there is anything behind the cut-outs reinforcing the cut section, such as a welded boxed piece or double wall piece, or if it's simply a cut-out shape to allow the tongue of the jack to slip in.

Feasibility of modifying a Sahara bar to incorporate HL points?

    Cheers

    Craig

If you want the hi-lift points just buy the deluxe bar, it also offers better frontal protection.

            Hear, hear MickL, agree.

And I reckon the Sahara bar looks very metrosexual, just what you would need to tie your wedding ribbons onto. Get a real bar and get out there.

Re: ARB Sahara Bar query, High Lift jack points

Not a put down but the sheer styling of the 120 prado is slightly metrosexual... not that I think it doesn't look better than anything else out there, but it is VERY stylish. I reckon the Sahara bar fits it's look far more than the deluxe bar and I was looking to buy it but if it doesn't have hi-lift points I might have to look at the deluxe (however I have a lift mate and reckon they're much better than jacking off a bar).

If it doesn't worry you, look at the lift mate - works great as you lift the wheel straight up rather than the chassis/body. Depends if you're trying to get traction under the wheels or trying to lift the belly from being beached (although this works anyway if you pack out under the wheels of course).

Buy the sahara and spend an extra $150 or so on the lift mate. But if you find a solution to modifying the bar, let us know here!

Re: ARB Sahara Bar query, High Lift jack points

                I bought a high-lift jack when I had a 60 series many years ago.
I used it once to try it out in the driveway and ended up damaging the bodywork.
Took it on many 4WD trips, and never used it, it is still in the garage, gathering dust.
I consider high-lift jacks to be dangerous as they do not have an adequate base plate or tongue to jack with.
I now carry a trolley jack which I have used many times, as you can jack up the suspension direct, not the body.
For sand driving, I would suggest an air jack or just use a shovel, which I use (also travel with others, so they can snatch you out of any indiscretion).

Just want to second Jons post, I am in a 4wd club and do driver training, we do not recommend high lift jacks at all, there are no points to fit them on most new 4x4,s and they are just plain dangerous, most of our older members have put them in the shed. I see many attached to roof racks of 4x4's in pristine condition, just adding weight to the roof rack.

Well i guess you guys havnt gone that hard off road in that case, my highlift jack has been used many times, used in mud and sand, on the rocks and clay etc for lifting trucks to pack under the wheels etc, also used to lift a truck after the wheel fell off on the beach, i have used it to help lift rolled trucks back over a couple of times(they work good in pairs for this but not to good on teh body work but when is a roll over good for body work!) and we have even used it as a pull along/winch type setup as well with great success - but you just need a solid point on the vehicle to jack on.

I also have a Sahara bar on my 120, its a shame they overlooked this feature on them...

Re: ARB Sahara Bar query, High Lift jack points

You might guess that I havn't gone hard off-road. You would be incorrect.
I do not, however like to take un-necessary risks when 4WD'ing.
Having used a high-lift jack and seen these jacks fall over or come off a jacked vehicle, I do not trust them.
Of course, there may be times when they would be handy. i would not like to be near or under a vehicle solely supported by this type of jack.
I have found that a Tirfor or power winch, trolley jack, snatch strap and a shovel are much safer options. I have seen an exhaust jack used sucessfully and would love to try the Maxtrax.
In any recovery operation, you should consider all the risks involved, which are many.

Re: ARB Sahara Bar query, High Lift jack points

Like I said in another thread ... its horses for courses.

What suits one bloke may not suit another ... and that's OK.
This forum is all about sharing ideas and opinions.

I probably couldn't be accused of going easy off road.   I'm pretty keen to take on a challenge but I won't take silly risks.
I also don't really trust high lift jacks ... particularly on a car with more plastic and panel work than strong jacking points.

I'll use one if I have to but I reckon I'll try all of my other options first.

That's not particularly a criticism of the high lift jack ... its more a personal preference ... and probably a lack of real and regular experience with them.

                          Cheers

Absolutely agree with Chippy, I love them - very versatile etc but can understand on a 4wd training course I wouldn't trust 90% of the people there to use one.
What I really hate though is why every flamin' thread which mentions high-lifts get some guy turning it into a thread on the pro's & cons of them - go away & discuss it with you wife..I don't care anymore..

Back to this thread..do we know anymore on this? Are they able to put the points into the bars?? Or can someone modify them??

I would be contacting ARB for engineering approval to ensure that the bar can handle the load imposed on it. I would imagine that it would be a case of cutting the appropriate holes and maybe fitting some aditional brackets.

Note, I now have an ARB steel winch bar that has the high-lift jack points and I still have my high-lift jack!
