  • Bottle Jack to Replace OE

I'd like to get a proper hydraulic bottle jack to replace the OE screw one, but I'd like it to fit in the same space as the OE and lift to the same height.
Has anyone found such a thing ?
The OE one alway makes me nervous when I am winding it up as it feels like it could collapse anytime.
    Cheers, Wayne

I bought a 6T hydraulic before the GTG, thankfully didn’t have to use it. I have a crate in the back of the Prado with tools etc, I just chucked it in there. It can be handy sometimes to have 2 jacks. I haven’t tried to fit it in the OE slot, might try tonight.

I got a Mean Green Recovery Bag from Opposite Lock. It stores my snatch strap in the lower compartment, with my shackles, gloves, hydraulic jack and anything else in the upper compartment. I just place this either in my car or camper, depending on my set-up. The bag is well built and keeps these items secure.

I kept the hydraulic jack out of my Land Rover as I find it vastly superior to the OE Toyota pos. It's got a bent bit of bar on top which securely locates it under the axle instead of it being a balancing act on the little round thing on top and is much safer.
It also fits nicely where the original did with a small mod to the plate it sits on.

Yes I should have kept my LR jack - the Disco one is a ripper.

Re: Bottle Jack to Replace OE

            Hi again all.
I got myself a hydraulic jack to replace the OE - it is a Masada 5 tonne ( $79 from Supercheap on sale.)
It's quite compact for a 5 tonne jack, and fits nicely in the compartment where the OE jack goes. ( althogh I'll probably keep the OE one where it is and carry 2)
The handle will also fit in there- by shoving it up into the rear quarter panel
It is Japanese made and looks quite good quality.
Doesn't go quite as high as the OE so on mine a 100mm block of timber is needed under it to get thefront wheel off the ground when jacking off the chassis ( non lifted vehicle might be OK ). The back under the axle is fine without a block.

But the pump action and quick release makes it SOOO much easier to operate and none of the creaking and groaning you get from the screw action one.
The new jack on the left the OE one on the right

            Cheers, Wayne

I have exactly the same Masada bottle jack.

Much easier to work with but at maximum extended height still shorter than the original Toyo jack. Just like you, I've got 2 pieces of 50mm wooden blocks to compensate.
              Cheers

Just a small suggestion - I found out the hard way, with previous vehicle.

Make sure its profile is low enough that with a blowout or complete run flat you can actually get the jack under the axle.

For this reason I carry two jacks one to lift a bit (OEM) and then the 2nd larger unit ( 6Tonne) to support the weight. Anybody thinks a 1.5 tonne rated jack will safely lift a fully loaded Prado is seriously mistaken.

Hopefully this saves people from my less than convenient experince - thankfull close to home & support at the time.

Very good point Jarrah... I've seen this happen on many occasions...

Re: Bottle Jack to Replace OE

The jack I bought ( pictured above ) is only slightly higher when depressed than the OE jack, so should not be an issue with run flats. Anyway I'm still carrying the OE jack ( I think it's rated at only 1.5. or 1.8 tonne  )

I also carry a 0.5 sq metre board of 20 mm exterior plywood as a base /load spreader. ( comes in handy for other things too ). Some people carry a flat steel plate.
This prevents the jack sinking into the ground on soft soil.

Re: Bottle Jack to Replace OE

While a hydraulic bottle jack is great (and I carry one myself) I wouldn’t be too quick to discard the Toyota one. It has been very useful for me on several occasions due to its compact size but very tall extended length.
Remember that you won’t always be parked in a nice flat concrete driveway changing a tyre. One day you might be doing it on some uneven rocky trail somewhere and you might find that the Yota jack is very handy indeed for slipping under the Prado... even if it’s only to get the first bite then slip a taller hydraulic jack under.

The 1500kg load rating is fine; the GVM for a Prado is less than 3000kg, so you’ll never get near 1500kg per corner even if you overload your Prado.

I’d suggest you keep your Toyota one and carry both....

Like Mick suggests I carry a hydraulic bottle jack and the original Toyota one. Should cover most situations.

I've been reading this thread with interest (made some comments above) and thinking about storage drawers so I was making some measurements this morning and decided that the drawers had to allow the jack door to be opened. In this process I opened the door for the jack and took it out. As a new Prado owner I was thinking that I've seen better jacks and after reading the vague manual (which only mentions where to position the jack for the rear) and trying to decipher the 'Dead Sea Scroll' that is the sticker on the jack, I got under the car and went looking for the jacking points. My goodness what were Toyota thinking???

It is rather spindly and how they expect it to jack up a 2 tonne car high enough to change a tyre in loose dirt is beyond me. My trolley jack handles it OK, but I can't really travel with that.

I was at the Bribie Gem Show on Saturday where by chance I had picked up a number of good size offcuts of timber that the wood carvers were getting rid off for a couple of dollars and there was a nice thick piece of Camphor-Laurel which was roughly 380x150x50mm thick and fairly even in shape, width and thickness. I spent the afternoon and smoothed off all the rough parts with a file, drilled a couple of holes and laced a piece of 6mm poly rope for a handle and now I have a jacking board to spread the weight in rough ground, I'll pick up a 5 tonne or so hydraulic jack to supplement the OEM jack.

Now I've been cutting and shaping Camphor-Laurel in the garage the smell in there is lovely. Hopefully this will also smell good (and keep away bugs) in the car as well.

Re: Bottle Jack to Replace OE

When I lifted my truck I no longer needed the Toyota bottle jack and carried my Hi-Lift jack as my primary jack with a jack stand to use when working under the truck. After hearing several horor stories and almost having one I decided to shop for a new method.

I found the  Powerbuilt® 3 Ton All-In-One Bottle Jack/Jack Stand available in the US, but made in China so may be available in OZ. It may even be available at Supercrap. It takes up the space of my Jack stand alone and is the weight of carrying both anyway.

It has a jack stand built into a bottle jack. It also has a large flat base and can be used in sand.

Good luck finding one and please post up if you do.
