  • ARB Alloy or Steel Roof Rack

Which do you prefer and why :?:

There is a fair amount of cost difference, some weight difference but they both appear as good units.

I have noticed quotes for the steel units here for approx $900 and I was quoted as follows by ARB Artarmon:

    - ARB Deluxe Alloy Rack with mesh floor ( 1790mm x 1120mm) $1359.00
Prices include GST and Fitting charge
    11
    ARB Alloy
    27.27%
    3
    ARB Steel
    72.73%

This all comes down to what you are going to put up there.

Bear in mind that the weight of the rack is included in the 100kg max roof loading of the Prado. I'm not sure if anyone has posted the weights, but the steel rack and mount must be pushing up towards half of that. A spare wheel and tyre (MT ATZ) weighs 33kg.

So, an ARB steel rack, a spare and a 20kg tent or something and you're about on the limit. It would be nice to know the weight differences, but alloy should be a lot lighter. Mine's a different brand, but I can easily lift my alloy rack onto the roof on my own, and I'm no strongman. Bet I couldn't do that with the steel one.

I read through your post earlier today, very informative but what really stood out to me is I would assume it is easier to modify the steel rack than alloy. Placing the two spare tire brackets was a great idea.

I should've done this first up. We carried a spare tyre up top (using the front bracket) for our Central Australia, Oodnadatta and Flinders tour. Rock solid the whole way. Never had to worry at all about the tyre moving about or ropes/tie downs becoming loose.

have noticed quotes for the steel units here for approx $900

            ARB Deluxe Alloy Rack with mesh floor ( 1790mm x 1120mm) $1359.00
Just to clarify the costs: (As of 7/2009)

List price for the steel cage is $822 and $1096 for the alloy cage.

The leg kit is $178 (same for steel/alloy) and fitting is $85.

Hopefully someone will be able to weigh a steel cage and add it to the thread already running.

I think they already have. Approx 50kg (steel) versus approx 30kg (alloy).

Yeah, I put the weight of the alloy cage on there but no one has weighed a steel one.

The ally one came in at 22.2 kg (cage only no mounting kit)

If someone could weigh a steel on that wouls clear up one more "about/approximate"

Hmmmm.... this is starting to feel like a double up.

Back to the point of the thread.

My choice was alloy for the weight saving, not for when driving but for when taking it on and off. The Prado with rack simply wont fit under our garage door so it had to be easy for the wife and I to take off.

It only takes 10min to take it off and hang it on the wall after getting home from a trip. I leave the legs on the Prado and just take the cage off.

This was my thought as well regarding the alloy....it can be difficult with height in Sydney and having the ability to easily remove would be a bonus.

I was surprised to see that the mounting rails left on less the rack actually does not look bad at all.
