  • Key problem! Where do I look for the key code?

Hi guys. My spare key shell has broken into pieces and I need a replacement asap. I found on this forum that if I cut the spare key from a locksmith, I need a five digit key code.
Since my PRADO is a second hand one, I couldn't find the key code anywhere in the car. Then I wrote a message to Toyota about the key code, this is what they replied:" the key number is located on the key barrel on the drivers side door". I just couldn't figure out where the key barrel is . Need some urgent help here.

    thanks

the key code is also on a small metal tag that is usually on the key ring, if the previous owner has taken it off it may be in the folder with the manuals,

if not, the barrel is what the key slides into when you unlock the door, you will need to get someone to pull the door skin off and have a look or remove the barrel if you still cant see it from there.

I think Wil has already answered the question, but there is a whole bunch of information in this thread that may help as well: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=951

I think the locksmith will just copy your existing key , cant see why he needs the code. Do you need the plastic shell or the electronics in it or the metal key part ?

the locksmith will be able to copy your key but if you need a new case with the electronics i think from memory there is a code in side the plastic case and you must match the code with the new case you get from Toyota

Did you have a look in the Warranty and Service book?

There should be a retail delivery card glued onto the first page, the Key Code is listed on that page.

If you phone your dealer with the vin (they might want to see proof of ownership) they can look on the Toyota online system & the key code should be recorded

                Regards Don
