  • Aluminium roof rack/cage

    G'day all,
Does anyone know a NSW manufacturer that makes an aluminium whole roof rack/cage to fit a 09 120. I'm after one that bolts directly to the vehicle, not on top of rails/bars. I like the steel ones made by various companies, but I don't like the weight. Seeing that this is my "day drive" as well as my "weekend escape" vehicle, I'd like to keep the weight down and the economy heigh.
    Regards,
    Bazza.

Im not sure of the price but Toyota is doing a rhino style basket for the 150 series GX to go with the 3 ar heavy duty system. I can not see why it would not fit the 120 as the bars are the same not sure of price. But Toyota bars are cheaper than Rhino but they are the same thing

        Re: Aluminium roof rack/cage

I assume that Bazza is after the ARB rack due to its length and flexibility in tie down points. If he was to go with a Rhinorack style alloy tray, then a similar size tray to the ARB would be the AT2112, which is 2100 long by 1240 wide. The issue with getting this rack and mounting it on top of 3 crossbars is the amount of overhang. The front to rear mounting points of the crossbars is 1336mm. So there's going to be about 350mm of overhang.

The tie down points is also limited to 6 eyebolts on the side and only where the cross bars are. I'm sure you can also secure light items by strapping them down and around the slats. You can also firmly strap around the crossbars.

With the ARB alloy rack, they use amplimesh for the base which provides almost infinite tie down points for lightly strapping down light items. Heavier items gets strapped down to the side rails and crossbars.

Bazza, I've got a TrackLander ally cage on top of my 07 GX from Jaram Roofracks in Perth and it's as tough as anything I've seen. Contact them online and see if they have an agent near you. It's only an email.

              G'day Bazza,

I know its not Sydney, but I can't help it if you live in the Boondocks. The boys at Tradesman in Bayswater VIC make a nice alloy rack for a 120 Prado. Weight is 23Kgs and the sticker says they can carry 150Kgs. I chose one because of the low profile - I can get into multi-level carparks with a clearance height of 2.1M (if I duck). Total cost fitted $1400.00.

You can check 'em out here:

              http://www.tradesmanroofracks.com.au/page10.php

and give 'em a call on (03) 9761 7466. Who kows - they might deliver or have an agent up your way.

I flicked them an email a couple of weeks ago and was quoted $1590 plus about $125 delivery to South East Vic.

Agree with mongoose. Just picked mine up today. Looks great and very accomodating and helpful. (Even let me stick it on top of my old rola racks to see how it looked!) $1300 Fitted - $100 discount cause someone had used it over a weekend and returned it. I think it is very similar profile and design to the Tracklander but the tracklander is 100 odd mm longer.
