When I reconditioned my bash plates, I had the same challenge.

I desperately tried to find a universal joint in my kit that was skinny enough to fit. Unfortunately, I had to suffer through the effort of using an open-ended ring spanner  . Yep, it was a test of my patience, but eventually got the job done.

      Thanks for the link LFaR.
I knew I'd seen it before, couldn't for the life of me remember the who or where of your post, but with the search I did, I ended up with either no matches or 35 pages and I don't have that sort of patience

        Bringing this up:

My factory bash plates are in perfect condition and although i dont do a lot of hardcore 4wding I was thinking of updating them with something more solid?

The question is would you guys bother or wait until i actually damage one and then replace it?

          Pjorek,

Im also looking for a bash plate replacement.. I have damaged mine slightly though due to offroading.

If you plan on going off road even occasionally I think its highly worthwhile as you will be offered more protection then the standard toyo plate. If you wait until your standard bash plate needs replacing, then there is a pretty good chance other components on the underside have been knocked around too.. the TJM bash plate extends further then where the standard toyo plate area covers, Im also led to believe the TJM one is thicker then the standard.

            Switched,

Yes I believe it is thicker and longer however it suffers from some knocking on corrugated roads, i'm led to believe??

Does anyone know the price of the TJM plate and whether it comes in two seperate parts or just one (not sure if it has the sump plug hole just like toyo one does?)

Not trying to talk you out of getting something but you need to ask yourself what sort of driving you will be doing. If you have a lift and tyres then a lot of potential damage can be avoided. If you are just going to be driving outback tracks then you probably don't need to upgrade. If you are going on tracks with large rocks which will usually be travelled over at low speed due to risk of damage then possibly a bash plate should be considered. They are heavier and will increase fuel consumption, like everything else, but probably not be a lot.

Besides the TJM plate there is also a Brown Davis plateto suit the 120 and probably the same for the 150. Don't know which is the better plate but both are heavier duty and longer than the standard Toyota piece of mild steel the flaps about. The Brown Davis one is 3mm thick and weightrs about 15kgs. It is listed as providing protection to the front (diff?), sump and steering and is part number UGTP120F1. I believe it does not extend over the transmission. You can pick one up for a bit over $300 last time I checked.

I've only heard good things about the Brown Davis plate, but do not have one myself as the standard one has lived well so far. I did find a link on 4wd Action forums about a fella who was very dissapointed with the TJM one in the lack of covaerage, altough he does mentioned the gearbox is protected so I assume it may be longer than the Brown Davis plate.

thanks for the comments. I hate paying for things i don't need hence my initial question. I'm just not sure if its better to "protect" the car before it gets damaged or wait for the original bash plate to go before spending any money. Seems like most people have waited and swapped only when their original ones were damaged....might be the way to go

I just had the TJM plate fitted last week. Paid $316 fitted. I must say I am a little disappointed and wish I went the Brown Davis path. The problem with the TJM plate is that it does not cover the front like the BD. You still have to leave the original Toyota plate on the front (the plate with the vents). Visually from the front you cant see anyything different and I was hoping to improve the look of the old bashed up plate. I thought this would be a crucial area to protect. I never thought the gearbox was in any danger, so the extra lenght is just extra weight. The other problem I have with the TJM plate is the exposed front diff. I thought the original Toyota plate offered more protection in that area.

If you use the TJM plate then you will also need one of Chippy's custom plates as on page 5 of this thread

I ended up buying the brown davis plate. Heavy duty bit of gear. The new ones now have protection for the bolts at the rear. The only down side is the toyota mechanic complaining of having to take it off to drain the oil. Sorry did I say down side. There is no down side for me. In total I have the ARB bar up front, then the brown davis and am thinking of the TJM for the rear. All up, very happy

Doesn't the bash plate have holes for oil drain access? If it didn't, I would cut them in with a hole saw.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

It certainly depends on the type of 4WD'ing you want to do. If you want the extra protection and security, then go for it. If you have any kind of hardcore in mind, then there's no sense waiting to damage a soft bash plate only to learn that more than the plate was damaged. Ouch!

You may even be able to sell your factory plates to recoup some of your cash. Worth a try.
