  • Winch Extension straps

    Hi guys

Looking to purchase a winch extension strap and have been hit with so many variants. They are available in 5m, 10, 20, and 30m lengths and various breaking strains. My winch is 9000 Premier and the specs say that it is fitted with 38m of wire rope (one of the reasons for selecting this product) so should I be buying a longer winch strap say 20m or would a 10m strap be sufficient. I know Chippy is going to say longer is better (before he gets a chance).

I guess effective winching distance with a 20m will give me over 50m of winching capability.

    Your thoughts would be appreciated

Your winch is always going to work near optimum with the shortest amount of cable wound off, generally winching only requires a short drag to clear an obstacle or sticky patch to get you mobile again, so a strap certainly can improve winching time by using the strap length rather than cable length
One of the problems is always finding a freindly tree or vehicle to anchor to so a 20m strap generally fits the bill for me by providing anchor options, although on one occasion I had 20m of cable and three 20m straps joined to get to a vehicle
For ease of use, storage size and versatility etc, I find 20m to suit me best

xvprado has hit the nail on the head with regards to keeping as much cable on the drum as possible. This sure helps the feed speed of the winch.

I wouldn't bother with less than 20 metres.

Thanks for your comments xvprado, I was thinking around the same.

        Others in the group?

When we went to the Watagans someone supplied an extension strap to assist Shane in winching his courier out, from memory, this looked like a 20m strap but unsure. Can anyone remember the strap and its length?

I would never say such a thing. I've got my missus convinced that shorter is better

that was my strap, but I cant remember how long it is. It was a mean green strap.

I would always lean towards a longer strap, as you can always fold it in half if needed, as we did in the Watagans.

Thats true for the winch speed but if you need the max power from the winch & dont wont to risk burning your solenoids out from overloading, you will want to pull as much cable from the winch as you can so your winch will work at its maximun power level, it might be slower but it will pull you out of the tight spot, other wise you will have to use a snatch block to double the line pull but that will halve your line speed, check your winch specs for line pull for each layer of cable & you will see what I mean

The last winch I had to do on my own proved the point. We ended up having to snatch off a tree 85 mtrs away.... 3 Lots of 20 mtr extensions and a couple tree trunk protectors for that one.

Everything within 75 mtrs pulled out the ground so we had no choice.

Team Piggy, snatch off a tree.... how fast could you get the tree to go, how much slack in the snatch strap was needed for it to be effective?

longer the strap the better, if your worried bout winch working hard, invest in a snatch block, only $100ish i think, and will near double your winch rating.

When you buy one, get a synthetic rope extension cable instead of a strap, that way you can use the extension rope with your snatch block for the heavy pulls

I am also considering a winch extension strap but am not sure about the strength required.

Some manufacturers only quote 1 value, presumably the MBS while others quote two values - a winching force and a breaking force.

I have a 12000lb winch so what strength strap should I go for?

A10, it really comes down how heavy your vehicle is when you primary go 4wd. If you are a weekend warrior type, then your vehicle will be lighter than say if you only off road whilst touring.

I have a 9000lb winch, as that is what my ARB bar is rated too (not sure how or why, that's just what ARB told me) so I just bought a 9000lb strap. I would recommend nothing heavier than 12000 but I would rather the strap broke then my winch cable/ rope, so I would recommend a 9000lb strap... that's just MHO.

If I had my time again I would get a length of Dyneema rope the same as is my winch with an eye in each end, cant go wrong there as its the same as what I already have, easier to roll up and easier to stuff into a hole in the back of the Prado, and can also be run through a snatch block.

                              Cheers Andrew
