Question with these retractable monitors is how strong the arm holding them is ... would it stand up to a long corrugated road if using it for GPS (or Car PC etc) ?

Seen many of them that wont retract properly after a nice set of corrugations or rough stuff.

Hmm, yeah i didn't think of that...

I guess i will be looking at the eclipse 2 din head unit...

3k is the problem with that though... i could buy multiples of that monitor and GPS' and Reversing camera + Monitors...

I guess thats the price of having and uncluttered cabin...

          No offence Drew

What! :!: :!: Turn it up!

My cockpit (it's not a cabin) isn't anywhere near as cluttered as I'd like it to be! hahaha

In all seriousness, I'm not happy with my screen where it is and I'm looking into other options also, but, like others, it's just not high enough on my priority list.

Interesting reading seeing what others are doing.

Byrnsie, is that mirror thing actually a mirror as well as a monitor?

It is meant to be but it is no where near as good as a normal mirror. Where I now have it positioned I can however see enough to keep an eye on my two young fellas in the back seat. Helps me with any refereeing decisions

You may need to also get yourself a yellow and a red card.

Re: Where to mount Rear Camera Monitor in 2007 D4D

So it’s been 2 years since the last posting in this thread. Technology must have got better and cheaper – and many PradoPointers must have increased their gadget count. Also Violet has decided he wants a reversing camera for car (and van). A major reason for me to have a camera on the back of the car is assisting reversing when hitching up a trailer. Lets call it a 'marital aid'  . I have reversing sensors to avoid running over kids (which I don't have anyway). Keeping an eye out behind the van would also seem to be an advantage over huge wing mirrors (based on other peoples comments)

                  So guy’s – what’s the latest??

I don’t have a permanent screen in the middle of the dash (taking the place of the radio) – mine is only installed on major trips (8 inches on a RAM mount). Plus if I want to keep an eye out on what is coming up to the back of the van, my PC is usually showing navigation or music. So I want a separate screen dedicated to cameras.

Can anyone add anything to the below?
                  • Mirror mounts seem a good idea – but based on comments here and elsewhere, they don’t function as mirrors well – and the screens are too affected by light. Is this correct?

                  • Sun visor mounts seem to have advantages – but if I want to see the screen, I have to put the visor down and that’s too big to have in front of screen for any length of time (keeping an eye out the back of the van). Anyone used these?

                  • On top of the dash is also a bit in the road of the driver and I always figure is saying “Steal me” to anyone looking at the vehicle.

                  • A screen in place of the sunglasses holder in the roof console would be quite good – has anyone used this (without replacing the whole console)?

                  • The position on the passenger side/top corner seems good (see Chippy’s posting on Page 1). This does not clutter the screen, is in the line of sight when reversing and looking to the left mirror, can be seen all the time if monitoring the rear view of a van – but I see almost no monitors that have a mounting for this position (ie close to the screen). Also in my opinion, the Polaris is too expensive compared to other screens/cameras – just to get a good mount for the monitor.

                  • Another small screen below the radio is a bit out of the line of sight when backing and things get a bit crowded here when there is a VHF radio, tyre monitor, microphone, brake controller etc (just check out Drew’s dash on a posing on Page 1 of this thread). Can anyone that has a monitor here please comment?

I think while writing this I’ve convinced myself that under the climate control is the only place. Not obvious to low life, can be seen at all times (for looking out the back of the van) and I could probably fit a bit larger one her. I’m just not sure how to mount (touching and almost flush to the facia under the climate control - not a long 'goose neck' and a suction mount)

It looks to me that a 100mm screen would be a good size. I know bigger is better - but I figure small is good enough. Perhaps even 75mm is good enough??

I ask the question again – what have other people done – what are the advantages and what wouldn’t you do again?

There are too many choices at the moment - and I can't make up my mind. PLEASE HELP :!: :!:
                  Violet

Re: Where to mount Rear Camera Monitor in 2007 D4D

                    Violet,
I mounted mine as shown below

To counter the glare I purchased a shade off ebay

Whilst the photo with shade has glare that was caused by flash I think because during day the screen is very clear.

The unit I bought (Waeco) has two buttons , one for each camera and I have one fitted to back of van and the other for Prado.

I use camera for viewing traffic rather than for hitching up and on both cameras get a view of back and lane to each side.

Am wrapped in the one on van as I can see whats behind as well as to the side of me
