  • "Knocking noise" - coming from the front ??

Recently i got both a Dual Battery system and OI Recovery points installed on/in my 07 D4D.

The Recovery points were attached by the two bolts (supplied) by TJM to the existing places that are made for the OI Recovery points.

I also got the dual battery installed into the engine bay.

So far so good - however recently i have noticed when i trun Right or i go over a bump in the road (sometimes) i hear/feel a knocking noise that appears to come from the front of GXL. I shudder each time i hear it... it kinda sounds like something is loose, but i have looked underneath, given the bullbar a good poke/nudge (nothing loose). I notice it mainly when i am turning RH going around a round-about and there is a slight depression in the road ... and then when the front RH wheel travels over the bump ... CLUNK/KNOCK... there is goes ... I havenot noticed any adverse handling apart from the noise. WHen on the highway - it purrs... backing out of the drive way ... no worries ... it only appears when there is 'less' of a load on the RH Front wheel ....

I am at a loss as to what it could be. I am worried that something will come loose and break next time i am out or about (say camping)...

Has anyone had any experience regarding this ? I realise that it is hard to replicate over the net - however i thought that i would put it out there and seek responses...

Still trying to isolate the area ....

    HELP ??

Sounds like a CV joint to me.

Yep, a CV something (joint or boot). The only similar experience I've had is with an old Ford Laser that would clunk when I turned the wheel. The issue for me was the CV boot.

My first thought was in fact the CV but this car is new so I doubt it to be a cv at this time. I would go to Toyota and get them to check it out as it is under warranty. If there is a problem caused by them installing the battery or recovery points I think toyota would have fun handballing the fix over to the installers. Hope I am close to the mark and it all works out for you mate.

I would be checking all of the under wheel arch guards etc as thats where they would have been working to do the twin batts. (RHS).

You'll hopefully find something loose or not bolted in right!

Otherwise I would go back to TJM or Toyota as suggested and have it looked at.
Problem is Toyota can charge you if its TJM's bugger up, so you really have to offer TJM the fix it look first to cover your bases.

Do it the right way or you could end up footing a bill!

            orangepeel,

I experienced similar problem with the front end when I had the ARB fitted. Initially I also thought it was the CV as I treated my prado fairly harshly offroad. However a trip to ARB at capalaba revealed that it was the splash guard, ARB forgot to tighten the screw holding the new spalsh guard after it was cut hence, the nasty noise. Maybe worth checking that out if you have an ARB bar fitted?

            Cheers

bloody hope not - CV - tis a new car !!!

Anyway, i have the tojo standard bar installed on the car. TJM only installed the recovery points on the car - i think they had to removed the bullbar in order for that to be installed corrected (Outback Idea recovery points).

When they installed it ... they did miss a small guard - they didnt install it properly ... however i have crawled underneath and cannot find anything that is loose or appears loose ...

What/where would i be best looking to find things that may be loose ... ?

I will investigate the dual battery install better - however i feel that the instal job on that was better than the TJM install on the recovery points ...

Kinda scary when you have a new car and after getting things done to it - to deck it out the way u want ... something happens ... knock knock ...

Did the noise present itself before the dual batteries were installed?

                Is the Battery secured properly?

                Who installed the battery?

Lots of questions, you need to figure what was done before the noise and what was after, then you know where to start looking.

If multiple people have worked on it theres a good chance its going to get messy trying to point the blame and repair costs.

                  Hi orangepeel ,

I know your vehicle is new and you have checked the underguard covers etc.
                  to totally discount the CV joints do this little test;

Go to your local shopping centre or similar where there is a nice flat smooth surface with front windows down, drive slowly moving to left full lock then slowly turn to right full lock and listen for any cluncking or clicking sounds if you have these sounds then it will be crook CV joint(s).

I agree with MT Pockets about the CV Joints but its better to be sure, if it proves positive then go straight to Toyota. I once had a brand new 4-Runner and when I changed the Transmission oil first time I found a brand new circlip wedged in the transmission drain hole Ow Arrr no manufacturer is infallible.

                  Hope this helps

yeah - trying not to get messy in troubleshooting the problem/fault.

                    TJM - Recovery Points
                    Auto Elec Dual Battery Install.

I will be getting back underneath to try and find the problem.

It 'appears' that the dual battery is installed correctly - the sparky sourced the parts from TJM (Battery cradle etc) and then mouted the battery into the car.

Apart from the bar holding the battery in the cradle, it appears to have two bolts/screws thru the RH inner guard to hold/secure to the car.

I will check that the screws/bolts are done up tight.

I have driven around with the windows down and i cant hear any adverse noises coming from the front. The only time i hear this is when i am travelling around 40km and then i go over a bump in the road - eg railway crossing or over a bump in the road on a round-a-bout - especially when there is a RH turn involved.

I hope that all it is is that something is loose and needs tighting, or a guard/boot/nut/bolt/screw (all the above) is the fault and can be fixed easily.

If there are any other suggestions on trouble shooting this fault - i am all ears !!

Years ago I put my XD Falcon in to get the aircon regassed. I picked up the car and went straight to Noosa to spend a few days with family. On the way I heard some noises that were not there before the trip and when I got to Noosa I lifted the bonnet and had a poke around. The aircon mechanic had left his brand new sidchrome 12 inch shifter jammed between the bonnet and where the shocky bolts up. I put the shifter in the tool box and no more noise. Score !!!
I hope your noise is that simple.

i had the same prob. Only occurred tight with right turn over uneven surfaces.
Turned out to be a tempreture probe which protudes out into the left front wheel arch. The probe just made contact with my BFG's which were wider than the Grandtreks. the probe left a telltale mark on the inside of the tyre.

The probe pokes thru a hole in the chasis rail and does sometimes vibrate/rattle giving a pinging sound.

Solution- bend the end of the probe slightly so it doesn't rub against the tyre, then wrap some soft tape etc around the probe where it pokes thru the chasis rail

                              Hi Oragnepeel.

You may already have done so, but when you next climb underneath, have a look at the lower radiator mounts, sway-bar rod ends and the two sway-bar centre mounts. It could be that the radiator was not put back in place 100% after the recovery points were installed or as I have seen on the wife’s Avalon, if the sway-bar ends are not properly tightened they can knock.

                              Good luck,

                              Paul.
