I'm not trying to be a smart arse here, but aren't these types of recovery
hitches welded. wasn't that what so much of the thread has been saying.
if it's welded, it's hard for it to be "rated".
i don't have 1 yet, but looking at pics of them, they either look welded,
or are machined out of a single piece of steel. (probably welded - cost)
and if they are welded, do they then come with a certificate or stamped stating that they are "rated"
and to what standard and strength.
i like these hitches from the point of view that they are easy to use.

The rear hitches are one peice of machined steel, with a hole for the pin and the shackle on one end, the welding in thread i think refers to the front hooks, these rear recovery hooks are as tough as they come.
Go to local forby shop and have a look.
PS don't drop it on your foot like i did, it f***ing hurts.

should be an easy sell, considering "it's my car".
thats what i'll told often enough, so she wont get to dirty playing with it.

Finally, I got around to bolting on the recovery points I also finally found someone who had hitch pins in stock, as the stock Prado hitch bolt would be a pain to get on and off when required :!:

Now I'm set for a long weekend up on Moreton next month

I looked at a couple - The ARB one is a full piece of steel, while I spied one at Opposite Lock that was welded - wouldn't touch it with a barge pole as it appeared the welds were not well done. I wouldn't want to be snatching when it let go.
Stick with solid rear hitch - it's the safest option by far.

                        • Welds can be rated. There are thousands of lifting beams hanging of crane hooks every day of the week that are each engineered and rated for a particular load.

The critical factor in the argument of welding vs bolting is that every bolt of a particular size and grade is the same (they are proof tested to guarantee this). Welding introduces a whole new set of variables and every weld layed down is different (slag inclusions, gas inclusions etc). To guarantee that the physical weld matches the weld specified on the design you need to test it (by x-ray etc), which is expensive.

However, this is where the argument on this forum about whether or not the front tow points fitted to the latest Prados are suitable for snatching or not becomes a grey area. I say this because the radiator subframe that the tow points are welded to is welded to the chassis. Looking at the photos in this thread and my folks 07 Prado it is the subframe welds that concern me. Your Outback Ideas recovery plates may be rated, but that's no good if there's a chance you can crack welds on the subframe by applying a shock loading everytime you snatch.

Ther reinforcement plates shown by steveo and RichardN go some way to solving this problem.

Whichever way you decide to go, be sure to use an equaliser strap to spread the load over both sides.

                          • I think I have said it before, but the standard tow hitch/ minus the tow ball, and a shackle is OK by all accounts I have read. For the rear anyway.

I and I have posted a pic of a rated recovery hook, undamaged, that broke in a snatch recovery.

Doesnt matter what you use, as long as no one can get hurt if or when it goes bang.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

                            • I fitted some rated recovery hooks to the winch cradle on my Prado, $20 each available from just about any 4WD or Auto shop, they come in black or if your after some bling, in bright chome.

                              • I mentioned on another thread somewhere that I had a knock from the front end of MUMSRIG only on bad corrugations. It was quite a heavy clunk and sounded like the front end was falling out when it occured.

Wouldn't happen around town, only on repetative bumps.

Finally worked out what it was!!

It was due to the installation of the Outback Ideas Recovery Points.
The mounting bolts were hitting the body mounts of the Prado on rough roads.. You can see how close they are in these pics of Chippy's.

I ended up trimming the bottom off the body mount bolt (non threaded section), which immediately fixed the issue...

                                Can't beleive I didn't see it before...

Has anyone else had this issue?
