  • Rear guard falling off.

Just picked up a second hand 120 prado and on the drive home the left rear guard came loose.

On inspection it looks like the mounting clips have broken. Any tips on repair or replacement?

Obviously get new clips first, Toyota or a local crash repairer is where I would look. I suspect you will need to pull the rear bumper to get the flare off. There are a few bolts under the rear bumper, also a few beneath the black plastic infill inside the rear door opening, other than a push clip at the bottom of the joint between the flare and the bumper there is nothing else to remove, just pull the bumper to the rear to separate them.

I presume you got it privately? If its dealer bought then should be a warranty job.

    Cheers Andrew

Take it off before it falls off and go to supercheap or Repco etc and try to get new clips, those are broken. Not sure how much Toyota charge but I had to buy new ones for the Rodeo from Holden and 10 or 12 were over $100! And that was after I complained lots and supposedly got trade.

Yes as the guru said if ex dealer go back. Panel beater is a good option, should have thought of that. Bugger.

If in any way your rear bumper is fatigued atound those clip 'mounts' you will simply break the mounts clean off the bumper its self.
Check to see if its the clips or if its the plastic clip mounts that are integrated into the bumper.
These mounts were the problem for me... Short of buying a new bumper (which i didnt) you can think outside the squre to fix it...

I placed some huge blobs of sikaflex on the clips and mounting areas, put the bumper in position then fix it in plce with 100MPH tape until its dry.
If the tape leaves a sticky gummy residue, use eucalyptus oil on a rag to remove it.

Hey its crude, but a trip to the cape and 40Kms later my bumper is still hanging tight.

Geez I would even use liquid nails if I got desperate on that one!!!

Living in the sticks we don't have much in our auto stores, apart from which I am no longer shopping at the local one after getting screwed last I was there. I got a couple of interior clips from the local crash shop last week and and he didn't bother to charge me, probably on a few cents worth for him.

I have bout the under gaurd clips from Toyota before and they pretty reasonably priced from memory.

I usually get a price first but thought the clips would be worth cents each so just walked into the spares place and ordered the bits. Ouch. The Rodeo has three different types on each guard. No idea why as the bits on the flare are all the same. Live and learn, hopefully.

Thanks for the replies. It was a private sale and I suspect it has taken a knock at some point. Closer inspection revealed the underside wheel arch bolts clips have come away as well. Any tips to remove the old ones, and do new ones just clip in? Ordered the coloured clips from Toyota they were about 3.00 each, but now have discovered I need the circular black ones for under the wheel arches.

Given its not under warranty I will attempt the repair myself, see how it goes, if no luck will take it to a panel beater.

The old owner has agreed to share the costs, which was good of them.

                  Damn thats a shame mate...
Be carefull if u need to pull the guard off any further as more of the 'mounts' may break...
Also Sikaflex takes quite a while to cure so di a few practice runs with the tape to ensure you will achieve a neat result.

Any chance the previous owner will go halves in a new panel?
I have no idea what it would cost though mate.

I reckon liquid nails would cure faster as well!.. Possibly stronger than sikaflex as well???

                  Good luck mate.

Toyota should have those blavk clips... They are the square shaft type from memory...
Very difficult to remove, just cut them off and fit new ones...

Get an opinion from a crash repairer on what would work well,
There may be a more suitable option instead of Sika or Liq nails...

Will get a quote on a professional repair as well before I attempt it myself. I am a sh#thouse repairer of anything p, but I am a male and I must try and fail first before I ask for help!

Puts a dampener on the purchase though, hopefully it's the only issue

Got a cash quote from a panel beater, only 80-100 cash job. Vey reasonable, will go with that rather than risk it myself.

                            Thanks for the tips!
