  • new rear door design?

I'm sure it's been posted before but I couldn't find it... ops:

can anyone tell me the story about this.

I saw one for the first time today (in Perth) and I had to look twice to figure it out. It was a D4D and although not badged as a Grande, it was full of leather. I found this photo (apparently in Sydney?? or perhaps photoshopped?) so was wondering if these are imports or new options? The badge on the one I saw just said LANDCRUISER (no Prado).

btw, the spare was tucked underneath like a LC.

Guess it solves the sagging rear door, but then you'd lose some clearance.

This is the model Prado that is sold in many other countries, and I didn't know they were available at all in Aust.

yeah that was my point - wondering if it was an import or now available here.

BTW - my guess is that the Sydney location is a photoshop jobbie - just found the same photo in a different city

I think these are available in NZ. Maybe one of our kiwi brethern has relocted to Perth and bought the Prado with them.

no it's actually quite different - threw me a bit when I saw it. note the black numberplate holder is missing and the handle is different and in a different spot

Looks to me to be the same door but without the spare and a new outside skin but still hinged to the driver's side therefore same sagging issue.

Hey guys first post for me ... Better try and make it count

This plane rear door is a new option in NZ or has been for some time now. I think from about 2006 onwards this “look’ has been available.

The car in the photo though is a JAP import. You can normally tell the difference with the front side mirror. also the badge TZ - indicates this to be a import straight from Japan. One thing about these imports though, they always have extra bells and whistles...... Active suspension, Height adjustment, electronic compass, onboard computer with all the little indicators etc...

Hope that answers the question from across the ditch.

This model also gets a rear diff lock option in Japan! What a pity Toyota don't see fit to offer us in Australia this option!

I would guess it's an ad for a Japanese Prado. The japs put the rear view mirrors way up the front of the guards like that and have done for decades. Have a look at any grey import - fourby or passenger car - and they all have this.

ajvanwyk and phoenix can you fill in your location in ya profile.

i like the look of this door.
with the spare being under the cargo, wonder what the fuel capacity now is.
either way, i like it. clean lines and smart looking.

Hrmmm not sure I like it. Looks sort of European to me. Not rugged looking like the current ones we have. I suppose it's a matter of taste. And I suppose you lose the 180L tank with the spare going underneath??

It would be a nice clean option if you were to fit a dual wheel carrier..

Regarding the rear door, some are like this in NZ
I hired one in 2003, and was my first experience in Diesel Prado. I was amazed at economy, power etc in the mountains. (It was a defining moment for someone who had owned Holdens since 17......and I knew the end was nigh for the Comode

Im sure it had single tank, spare under rear etc. I have some pics somewhere but cant find.

Meanwhile, I saw quite a few like this last Oct when we were in South Island NZ, def with spare under rear. Most had spare on back door, but quite a few like this, so I assume its an option
Here are some pics from NZ Toyota website

Hope this clarifies some questions about the one in previous pic
                            Cheers

This is the european model, if you look at Prado's in Oz on the rear bumper black strip there is a cap thats for the spare wheel winder.

The long ranger 21L water tank utilises this spot for the filler cap.
                              Cheers,
