With all the lifted Prados exhibited on this forum I am surprised that not many, if any at all, have bothered to instal longer mudflaps. The factory spats barely keep the stones in check with a standard suspension. I noticed tar all up the back and sides of the rear bumper when I drove through some new roadworks near Northam.

I've added some after market mudflaps by drilling 3 holes and fixing the mudflaps to the rear of each spat with stainless bolts. They also reduce the amount of gravel thrown up at my camper trailer.

The problem with extending the mudflaps is that they rip off easier in the rough stuff... I've still managed to tear mine off (standard length) even with a lift and larger tyres.

It all depends on the type of driving you do of course, but if you've got a lift you probably intend to take it off road.

      Re: Mudflaps

The standard mudspats let gravel and tar flick up along the outside of the bumper putting holes in the paintwork. I played around with some different lengths and finally added a 75mm extension. I've just returned from some bushbashing east of Wiluna and they have survived. The rears, I have found in the past, usually get torn off when reversing.

        I have done the same.

Only takes a couple of minutes to take them off before hitting the rough stuff (if you remember :? )

Or build a set like this for $10. Bolt onto chassis and keep far enough away from the tyres so you don't rip them off going backwards (usually to recover nissans)

I like this idea, and would like to see a pic or two of how you've fixed these under the back of your prado.

They do look good. How about you take one off and grab a few shots of the construction and mounting Rusty.

                Re: Mudflaps

Now, after nearly 2 years, my extended mudflaps are starting to split the factory piece. I guess the weight of the additional rubber is too much. A horizontal crack is forming on all four mudflaps right where there is a cast in line on the stock flap.

I'll have to look at bolting something up to the chassis now.

                      Re: Mudflaps

i've torn the lower half off one from and one rear mud flap already. if you have a closer look, as the flap folds forwards and back when off road, the flaps crease and become weak, and can break off easily.

fitting longer rubber/plastic mudflaps onto the existing factory ones is ok, but they will add extra weight and also have the issue of getting caught between the ground and the tyre when reversing.

they kinda suck cos they are a large moulded piece.

maybe a thinner lighter rubber attachment may be better, as it may tear off before damaging the factory flaps.

                        Pics as prommised:

                        under side:

                        myspace image uploader
From the back, If you cut the rubber on the corners with a radius it stops the flap curling

                        image uploader
                        Right hand side.

                        image host

I may have to take them off to paint them. Maybe.

The RHS on V6 may be a bit harder as the exhaust is different and has a muffler in the way.

My original pics have gone into ciberspace so i have added below.
Easy job to do. Just a couple of bits of 50 x 6 approx 200 long, bent 90 deg for 25mm on one end. 22 or 25 rhs (box) welded to suit drop and width. Rubber is from Clark rubber, just remember to raduis the corners to prevent the rubber from curling.
The rhs should come just behind the original flap as per pics.
