  • Question about brakes

    Hello,

I took my Prado into Toyota Kenya to have the front brakes replaced(originally, I went in to have the handbrake serviced).

They called to tell me there is now a problem with a seal/front brake cylinder assembly.

There wasn't a problem before I took it to them.

Is it possible that they screwed up? Can you mess with the front brake cylinder assembly when replacing the front brake pads?

I will be picking up the vehicle today and want to have an intelligent discussion with them(ie. know the lingo).

Any assistance from my Prado brothers would be appreciated.

How many K's has it done?

Most likely they found a seal leaking, the pistons can rust if the brake fluid hasn't
been changed for awhile and damage the seals.

They need to push the pistons back in when they change the pads but it shouldn't
damage them if the pistons are in good condition.

This is a common problem with the 120 brake calipers . The seals around the pistons in the calipers leak causing the piston to corrode and seize in place . They now use a different seal , when I did my front calipers I had three out of eight pistons seized in place . Sorry for the bad news .

        Thank you for your help.

The vehicle has done 94,000Km. About half of those have been in Kenya. It was imported used from Japan. Apparently, Japan floods the East African Market with used Toyotas.

I went ahead and had the work done. The new front disc brake cylinder assembly was 32,000Ksh($400USD).

Apparently what I was told is the same as my Prado brothers have already stated. The pistons had seized and the pads were wearing out prematurely. I could have left it but then my pads would have to be replaced.

        Thanks again.
