  • Rear Diff Chatter

Has anyone had probs with rear diff chatter on 2006 GLX with standard LSD. Have tried different LS oils but noise/vibration still there on take of while turning. Have been told that adding a friction modifier to diff may help diff friction plates slip easier. Don't like the thought of using additives. Thought of trying heavy duty LS140, but not sure if this oil will be too heavy. Feedback appreciated. Jonno

    Re: Rear Diff Chatter

    Hi Jonno
I had the same problem with my 2008 model
I had it serviced by an independant mechanic, not by aToyota dealer. After a few months I experienced a simular problem. To cut a very long story short, I took my car back to Toyota as it was still under warranty. They claimed that incorrect oil was used in the diff.
They replaced the oil with Toyota spec and the problem disappeared.
While that was happenning, I contacted my mechanic who had serviced my car and told him what Toyota had said, he told me he only used LSD oil in the diff.
But no matter what he claimed, the changing of the oil by Toyota fixed the problem.

      Re: Rear Diff Chatter

My 09 GXL auto diesel did it from new. They replaced the diff oil and told me "it was a running in oil and should have been changed out at 10,000km". There's nothing in the service manual about running in oils.

It still has a little bind when turning full lock at slow speeds on concrete or bitumen, but feels like the LSD just doing it's job. Anyway, it's noted in the service history in case of future problems. 2 year service done in January (40,000km) and they replaced all the diff oils - no more binding noises.

          Re: Rear Diff Chatter

My 09 120 GLX started to get rattley around 40,000k. It got hat bad that it would shudder through the whole vehicle every time I turned or moved off from a dead stop.
At the next service, the dealer said that I was very common on the late models with LSD's. They changed the oil and added a friction modifier and so far, no more problem.

Thanks Bazza, would that mean the friction modifier needs to be added every time the diff oil is changed or is it a one off treatment? Jonno.

                Jonno,
Sorry, I have no idea about the frequency of adding "friction modifiers". But I will say this, mjrandom, as long a the problem goes away, and while it's under warranty, they can tell me that they added pulped watermelon skins crushed by the feet a nubile virgins, as long as it written on my copy of the job sheet!

Many years ago my brother had a holden ute with a noisy diff, we fixed that by shoving a dozen babanas in  worked long enough to sell the ute. I personally would prefer the watrermelons crushed by the virgins though

I have a 2009 GXL with 36000KM's I have had the same issue for the last 2000km's. I will have to let them know when I get my 40000km svc. It's not going to harm the diff will it? i.e. premature wear.

Forget additives. Either the oil in it has been incorrect or the diff needs to be overhauled.

Buy two lots of genuine toyota oil for your prado.

Drain the current lot, replace with genuine. Run it for 5oook and then drop it and replace with the other lot of genuine oil.

If this doesnt fix it, and its a bother, time to have it overhauled.

                        Re: Rear Diff Chatter

Just got back to Oz and I was otherwise too occupied in Japan to keep up with this thread.

Friction modifiers generally use phosphous based products. These eat bronze, brass and virtually all copper/zinc alloys like there is no tomorrow. LSDs rely on friction plates to force the diff into working like a locked diff and only once the preload is exceeded do they slip and allow the diff to work like an open diff. Most of these plates have bronze faces or pads so yes it is possible that the pads will disappear but as I haven't got the metallurgical anatomy of a Toyota diff in front of me I can only speculate. What amazes me though is that the LSD in my 90 series worked effectively for 7.3km. After that it was pretty much useless and I relied on the handbrake to force it to work off road. The 120 has TC so no LSD and no problems as described. Like TT says ensure your oil is the correct oil for the job. Flush it and look for nasty bits that shouldn't be in the oil. 120s have a habit of eating diffs as evidenced by this forum. I doubt whether the LSD is any more effective now than it was in the 90 series.

Bananas also work well in rotary engine sumps as long as you push the car to the sleazy car yard first. Fire it up only once and then trade it as is where is..........
