  • Low Range Shake/Wobble

Hope I wont get in trouble for posting this but I searched endlessly and haven't found an answer to my problem.

I have 2007 D-4D GXL auto and have noticed over the past few weeks that whenever I engage low range, there is violent shake/wobble in the whole car. The wobble is amplified in the transfer lever and is most noticeable when engaging from drive to neutral and vice versa (the shift lever moves atleast 3-5cm side to side).

The wobble is only really noticeable when stationary and foot on the brake. The wobble dissapears when I start to move. It feels similar to easing pressure on the brakes at the lights very slowly and the car slowly jerks forward, almost like ABS engaging and disengaging.

Is this sounding like a broken mount or is it perfectly normal and I'm just being paranoid?
    Thanks in advance!

Not entirely sure, Brad, but it may be just the low gearing making the force on the wheels a little stronger, and your brakes are struggling a bit more to keep the car still?

I assume you don't have the "idle up button pressed, or that you don't have an idle too high.

Certainly my car is not as bad as you describe, but it does chafe at the bit in low range.

      Thanks for the reply.
I need to get underneath and check out all the mounts. It seems to come and go though which is interesting?
      Will keep it updated!
      Cheers

        Re: Low Range Shake/Wobble

Doest happen to be doing it in normal high range when you put it in gear but when engine is cold ?? Was only the other day I was speaking to a bloke in the local shops who pulled up and was sitting there droping it in and out of gear when he got out I asked what was wrong, he said whole bloody thing shaking when going from park to drive or reverse but would stop shaking when in park or neutral but was heaps worse when he put in low range to the point of the prado virtually rocking. I informed him of our friends prado doing the same thing and gave him my phone number and asked him to ring me when he solved the problem, after going to 3 dealers before getting it sorted turned out to be 1 passengers side engine mount (apparantly vacuum controlled) and 2 new injectors (which was not showing up on there diognostic machine) he said now running again like brand new. It was fixed by Windsor toyota here in Sydney. Regards Steve

          Re: Low Range Shake/Wobble

          Hi Steve.
Interesting.... Mine doesnt seem to do it in H4 or normal drive - only L4. Very severe though similar to what you are describing. I will have to take it to the dealer and get them to check it out by the sound of it. Could be the mount on it's way out. Scary thought though with what you mentioned about 2 injectors!
