  • front and rear diff oil changes

From experience what is the best gear oil to use.Can I use API.GL5 90 grade gear oil in both diffs.Or 90 in the rear and 80w/90 in the front diff. Ricki

Re: front and rear diff oil changes

because the rear diff is lsd, you need to use a oil suitable for lsd, i use castrol ls90 in the rear as well as the front, it just saves buying 2 different types of oils, the ls90 wont hurt the front diff. just a thougtht. cheers samo
had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

That is exactly how I do it too. The only problem that I keep having, is that I never check the workshop properly before purchasing oil. I presently have 4 x four litre containers of Castrol LS90 with varying levels of fullness sitting in the shed.

Re: front and rear diff oil changes

LS90 front and rear, and change the front one every 2nd service, as the front diff is very small. You can use other diff oils, but for the sake of a few $$$$$ it is easier to just get the one oil.

Castrol LX90 in the front and rear for me too.

I second croozza's statement about changing the front regularly. Its under constant load (being full-time 4WD) and has about 1 liter of oil to the rear's 3 odd liters.

LS90 front and rear, and change the front one every 2nd service,
That would be overkill for me. I change diff oils every 40,000kms. Every second service would be every 10,000kms for me.

Re: front and rear diff oil changes

              Silly question?!?!?!?!

How do I know if I have an LSD in the back?

Mine has a the remains of a sticker that says "N55" on the rear only.

              Does that tell you anything?

LSD is standard on Prados unless you have a locker (Kakadu ?) I'm not sure about models with traction control though. Besides, there's no harm putting LSD oil in a non-LSD.

                  Hi Williade
                  Thanks for that.
                  Its not a Kakadu.
Its one of the first of the 120 series 2003 Grande if that makes any difference.
Any idea what the normal service intervals are for the diff oil changes?
                  Cheers

Your Grande has an open rear diff (NON LSD) as it has have factory traction control fitted. The Toyota service schedule has both front and rear diff oil changes at 40k kms. As others have pointed out, unless you only drive to Church on Sundays then you may want to shorten the time for the front diff service.
