  • Why is the Prado full time 4WD?

Does anyone know why Mr Toyota made the Prado full time 4WD, but the hilux is not? Seems strange.

Our other car is a Rodeo with freewheeling hubs and its often handy to be able to leave the hubs open when on low range - great for backing heavy trailers up steep and tight concrete driveways. Would be good to have this option in the wagon.

the Hilux is more of a workhorse than the Prado and still has leaf sprung rear, strange that it has IFS at all in my opinion. No surprise that they are yet to fit constant 4WD to their workhorses, much like the current Landcruiser ute and troopy variants.

The last 4WD I owned with freewheeling hubs was a 1976 FJ40, so correct me if I'm wrong, but I was of the understanding that engaging 4WD with hubs unlocked was not a good idea and had potential for damage to the splines? Anyway, never saw the sense in them, mine were always locked because I would never remember to lock them when I needed them.

The Grande has a separate diff lock switch and is able to engage low range without having the centre diff locked, so I take it you have a GXL?

It should be possible to fit a diff lock switch and disable the automatic diff lock that occurs when low range is selected.

You can select low range without engaging the centre diff and still have that option on your Prado (atleast you can on my 150 GXL). I use it when reversing the camper trailer back ito the carport

Having the centre diff locked in low range is standard on a 120 GXL, if you got an option pack from the factory or a VX or Grande you can select low range and have the centre diff open. It would be a good mod to do on the GXL, it has been discussed before in other threads and I think everyone has put it in the too hard basket.

I would be more inclined, if I were willing to spend the money doing this mod,
To fit an FJ cruiser transfer case, and then front and rear lockers, with no centre locker.
However, If I was going to spend that much, I would also do a SAS swap. But all that would cost more than the car is worth.
