  • Whining noise

After my last 4x4 outing i've noticed a very destinct whine coming from my drive line (i think). It does sound like it's coming from the front diff, however I had that pulled out to fix my leaking arb locker (4th time) and they said everything was fine. They said it may be the wheel bearings but I don't think so as noise changes when you go on and off the pedel.

Then I though it might be the aftermarket cv which was binding, but that was replaced with a geniune part and the noise it still there.

When I tow my boat it's definately louder, but I'm thinking it could be the rear diff now. Any ideas? Hopefully not my gearbox or transfer.

    Hi mate.Check you passenger seat.

I had the same problem as you, then I went for a drive leaving the missus at home and the noise was gone.............................................. .. Funny how it only happens with her in the car!

I've had my lockers in for 2yrs now and it was only after my last hard 4x4ing trip a couple of months ago it started... Definately not the wife! The only other thing it could be is the Nitro diff gears apparently can sometimes get noisy.... I just don't want anything to go bang!!

Whining from wheel hub bearings can disappear if the throttle is released or in some cases applied. Don't wright them off yet. I would get the end float on the front hubs checked to see that they are within spec.

The diff gears shouldn't be noisy unless the backlash is all wrong.

Also check your oil. i dumped mine in Kununurra and she was a black sludge, fillled with metal. Have done another 250km since then so will drop the oil tomorrow and see if it is the same. If it is then this trip could come to a grinding halt.

I had an issue like this and it was the bearings on my idle pulleys for the fan belt. I think there are three idle pulleys and the bottom two can get dirt and stuff in them which makes them sound pretty off. I have had two of mine go after a bit of fun in the mud.

Mine would make the noise at idle and it would change slightly with revs. Was always present whether the car was in gear or not.

You talking about the shiney microscopic particles that you can see all through the oil?

Partly, there is also 1cm worth of build up on the magnet and the oil is black.
Remember the diff has had 4 changes in 5,000km.

The 250km change was also black and sludgey, oil looked like a metal flake thick shake.

                    That does not sound good.

Question: Can you engage a center diff lock, and drop the offending Diff Drive Shaft (front or Back, whichever) to unload the problematic Diff? Might give it a few more Kms before it detonates.

Would have worked a treat in the old FJ (mind you it was older than I am!)

Hi i am new to here, but currently my 120 series is in with toyota, they are trying to chase down the same problem.
What my 120 v6 is doing when i drive normal under 90klm its all smooth and happy, but soon as i put my foot down at any thing
above 90k weather its 90, 95, 100, 110 there is a whining noise comming from the front and i can feel it on the steering.

What toyota first said: its your tyres change them (had falkens with 75% remaining on them)- i went out and bought a set of coopers atr.-----The noise was still there.
Toyota still have my vehicle and they have now done the following:
Changed all 4 wheel bearings - noise still there
Checked the diff - (they are fine) but the noise is still there.
Checked the Tail shafts - (they are fine). but noise is still there.
Now i have only had the atr coopers for under 3 weeks and 1 week its been with toyota - they have said its my tyres still!.
Funny isnt it but at the same time its not, so any ideas ???
i am going back tomorrow as they are going to put a set of tyres of a 150 gxl on to mine to proove its my tyres again.
Checked the cv joints - (they are fine) but the noise is still there.
