As previously suggested, it might be a simple retighten.

Another consideration... If you drive through mud and have not extended your diff breathers, then it is worth checking your breather is not caked with mud and is still 'breathing' . There are stories of clogged breathers causing the pressure inside the diff to build until oil squeezes its way through the seals  .

Well I have had my third and that was the Britz camper that backed into my drivers side rear bumper. :x

LFaR you probably have not seen my weather station page in my sig but if you do you will see Alice Springs has had a total of 18 mm of rain this year. So I think the mud theory is out for me. I will however check to see if something else has obstructed the diff breather, you never know what could happen when people work on your car. thanks for the tip.

        Cheers

Hey Mathew what ever happen about your diff saga?
I haven't had time for PradoPoint for some time - 34 pages of new posts!

In the end the metallurgy inspection and report was going to cost significantly more in time and money than just fixing the diff myself. So $600 for a new complete diff from a wrecker and half a days labour to strip and re-fit with locker and I was back on the road.

The saga does make me a little more cautious when venturing into the rough stuff now though!

If I hadn't read this thread, and had the diff blow out of reach of the flat tow man, I'd be looking to remove the chunks out of the diff, lock the centre diff and remove the back end of the prop shaft.

Do you think that approach would work ok? I'm sure it's be noisy as heck, but with the trimmings out of the diff case, it should at least idle along ok for a few klicks... Not sure I'd be keen to attempt removal of the CW by myself out in the bush...

                    Hi. Yes I did.

I was trying to ask if cleaning up the broken bits rolling around inside the diff would be effective as a limp home measure as opposed to stripping the diff down and removing the crownwheel like Paul described at the start of the thread.

Sorry I did not make myself clear... I'm not sure I would be up for doing what he did without a lot of useful types around. Still, it's amazing what you can do if you have to...

                    • I would imagine you would still be chewing the thing out.. Also driving home like it may void any warranty claim.

As the only way into the diff housing is to pull the diff out you may as well pull the gear off as you have done most of the work already ( axles out, tail shaft off and diff out)

                        • Great! I just blew my diff today and reading all this sounds so simular to what happened to me big hills, clunking noises , flat bed tow trucks, etc etc. Haven't taken it apart yet but a recon diff sound's easy then diff lockers if I can get it past the CFO!!!! Let you know more latersssss!

What exactly were you doing at the time it blew? I've never used diff locks before but I'm starting to wonder if installing a set plus a training session might be in order for me. Especially If I do my round Aus trip. Or my Bungle Bungle trip. Or my Mt Augustus trip. Or my Karijini National Park trip.......

                            • After doing some checking I see that the locker part number for the prado rear is the same as the luxs. Is their a chance you could use a strengthened Lux c+p in the Prado?

Also after actually using ours on the weekend I feel the crap low range coupled with the auto in them may be an added cause of stress. Unlike a manual when you come to a halt you stand on the clutch or it stalls out relieving driveline stress. I noticed that doesnt happen in the auto and that at times found it trying to hop forward after I had stepped off the gas.

Lockers will definately help in diff failures as they stop a lot of the causes of diff failures. I will be fitting them to ours and will be looking into a way to fix the terrible low range, as I believe it will help also. The Lux at 2500rpm is going half or less the speed the Prado does at the same revs.

                              • Hey, Iron Paw,

I was climbing a slope at Crystal Creek nothing to major , have done alot worse, city views , Lavuka, without lift kit and decent tyres! Half way up got stuck in a rut and then BANG!!!! Wouldn't go up could only go down limped to nearest rest area and took off prop locked it in HL and hoped it go away but still BANG BANG BANG!!!!! Got a nice tow back to Brisbane for $400! Now waiting to strip it and see if it's the C+P if so should get a rear diff recon for $700 then just got to fit it! Hoping all's well! May not do the Lockers have heard they don't tend to help out in those situations, plus I can't afford it so may wait on it! Toyota wanted $1600 to do the job that's provided thats what it was , $110 per hour of labour pour mechanic gets a third of it if he's lucky lol! Will keep you posted!
