  • Rear diff oil capacity

Just changed the oil in the rear diff. 2.4L came out (no water in it so the diff breathers must be working okay!!). The owners manual states the capacity (without a diff locker) is 3.1L. I put 2.5L of fresh oil in and using the little finger test the oil level was just below the filler plug hole, so I stopped there.

Is it usual to have such a discrepency between what is stated in the manual and what actually occurs?

    cheers

I always refill till the oil just starts to come out hole then you know its dead full, Possibly an extra 600ml might go in if you work out the area left to fill till it comes out the whole. Its a bit like oil changes, I aways get MORE in then what the books says because I drain my engine oil over night so it sits there draining for 12 hours or more where as in a workshop its dumped in 10 minutes. And dont forget that diff oil is heaps thicker then engine oil so if you also drained it over night maybe you would have got another 600ml out of it........ Cheers Steve

When I put my Lokka in and refilled the diff fluid,it took 3L. Mind you I had the third member out and cleaned it out properly. There is about 50-100ml maybe more or so that sits on the bottom of the diff housing that is below the drain plug. As Steve said, diff fluid is quite thick, it flows easier if warm. Take it for a ride around the block, and refill and it should be good.

Thanks guys, took it for a run this afternoon and filled it up so the filler hole started to overflow (it took about 600mL). The front diff was much harder as I had to deal with the transmission cover plate and the 10mm hex plugs were very tight. All good now.

        Cheers
