  • Blown Diff

Just to add to the stats I thought I would add this one
Stuck on stand dune, applying hand brake to give more traction
    In reverse then going forward
    Bang
A Strange noise from rear of car.
Takes me back to the HQ Holden
    Blown Diff.
I nursed it to the road with help of Leachy, Chippy, and Others.
Rang for a big Yellow truck to tow it away.
    Costs so far
Towing……………Free (RAC towing) membership has privileges.
    ½ day of work lost
ARB Diff Lock IN BOX …………………………………......……$1219.00 with Discount
    TO COME
Fixing damaged axles(bent), wheel bearings, Crown and pinion…….......................................... ............................$1700.00
Mounting and buying compressor and switches………………...$500.00
Mine is a 2003 TD out of warranty with 84900km on the clock.
I was told that the axels are bent slightly (8 THOU ) but probably weren’t the cause of the crown wheel giving in and could be straitened.(probably)
Wheel bearings are leaking in water and need replacing as well.
    Find out more tomorrow.
    Go the lockers

    That's an absolute bugger Russ.

What's with the bent axles - too many take off and landings or just age and use ? I've got 85,000 Kms on mine now (yeah - I've done 30,000 since Easter) and I'd like to think it's going to last me longer than that.

I was hoping you were going to run a slightly different poll - how many blown diffs have been on white Prados and how many have been on those other Prados (the non white ones)

Good luck mate - hope it all goes together quickly and easily.

    Cheers
    Chippy

Why would you apply the handbrake to give more traction?????

Doesnt your prado have the hill start control? I thought all prado 120's had it, take your foot off the brake and it holds for a couple seconds to allow you to take off without rolling.

The POll really needs a "how many havent blown a diff" to show a real comparison on how many have/havent.

Its bugger all from what has been sold, well less than .1 of a % I am told by a friend in Toyota warranty section?

Hey TP - that .1 of a % obviously doesn't discriminate between those Prados bought as taxis and shopping trolleys and those that actually go off the blacktop. I wonder what the % is like for those that do venture off road ??

I think we hear about it more on PP because there are a group of guys interested in taking these vehicles a little bit further than the Woolies car park??

        Cheers

This is done to apply load to the LSD and get more torque to the non spinning wheel...

GXLs can get better traction when one wheel is spinning freely by appling the hand brake gently to enable the LSD to transfer to the other wheel.
Works a treat most of the time.
I won't have to worry now as the locker will fix that problem.

what would be interesting to find out is if all the blown diffs are LSD ones or if there are some with open diffs and traction control that have blown as well
