Been using penrite up until the last oil change, when I thought I'd try the repco branded stuff as its a bit cheaper. Diff oils seem fine , but I have noticed with the cold weather the gear changes are not as smooth until warmed up. The penrite oil was better, will switch back next time.

          Forgot to mention engine oil...
Use penrite HPR 5W-30 in cooler months, and 10w-40 when it's warmer. The 5W is definitely the way to go in cold weather , much smoother starting

              Yeah thanks #############,
the guy at repco mentioned that, seemed to think that the cheap oils they make are the repco ones. Rather than the more expensive penrite ones, if that makes sense. I compared both, they were different colors, but maybe that doesnt mean anything

New prado's use a lighter fluid in the driveline. Not sure if the driveline was changed or if it's a fuel economy thing.

Should you be using a limited slip oil in an open diff? ( the front diff is not LSD)

Using an LSD oil in a non-LSD is not a problem. You have to be carefull with transfer cases and manual gear boxes. If the owners manual states GL4 oil only, you shouldn't use a GL4/GL5 oil unless the manual also states you can use MT-1 and the LSD oil satisfies the spec. The additional EP additives can attack bronze components in the gear box depending on the alloy. The EP additive is usually a sulphur/phosphorous type additive which turns corrosive as it degrades. More expensive/heavy duty oils use a borate additive which is universal and dosn't cause any problems with corrosion.

This was the advise provided by Caltex lube techs guys when I was purchasing oil. They suggested for transfer cases, if in doubt, always use a GL4 only oil as most manufacturers are not forthcoming with their additive technology.

I have recently added an ARB locker to the rear of my beast, I presume I don't need to be using LSD oil anymore. What type of oil are others using for this?
                        Cheers
