  • Transmission Cooler Return Pipe

    Hi,

I'm installing a gearbox oil cooler on the weekend. Is the pipe at the bottom of the radiator the return line back to the gearbox?

    Thanks,

On the 150 which should be similar the hoses have colours and the top one is blue. So assumed that was the return line.

Thanks. I'd seen a photo on the forum before that suggested the same. It didn't make sense to be as hot water comes into the top of the radiator and cools as it's pumped down so I was thinking that the ATF would be piped in the same way i.e. top to bottom.

If I can't get and answere, I'll pull the bottom hose than start the car. Was hoping to avoid this due to the mess I'll make in the process.

I found that the top oil line going into the radiator was the return line to the gearbox (A750F). This is the opposite to what I expected.

I'll have to pull a hose and find out the messy way. I used an IR heat gun to check top and bottom temperature difference. The bottom hose was 6 degrees cooler than the top.

The top hose is definatley the return line. I drained and filled my fluid a few times with 8L 20000km ago. The fluid went from brown to dark red. Was brown again today. Only had 8L of fluid so I couldn't fully flush the torque converter. I'll drive another 20000km and flush with 12L.

                Daz,

My installation including how the pipes are run is almost identicle to yours. My cooler is on the other side of the radiator because the AC condensor fan is on the drivers side.
