    Hi All,

Ive just noticed that there is oil leaking from my near side CV joint, does that mean my CV is stuffed or just a seal leaking? Are CV joints covered under factory extended warranty?

    Thanks for any info,

    Cheers,

    Steve J

        Hi Big Dave,

I'm gonna call in at Toyota & ask em what the story is, u might know b4 me if the cv is stuffed, I also hope it's just a leaky seal.

        Cheers

            Hi guys,

if you seem to have an oil leak near the front c/v it is likely where the shaft goes in to the front diff.
mud and grit can get past the metal cover that helps protect it.
sometimes pressure washing can be the cause it actually pushes the grit in to the seal area.
a re-wash with the hose to make sure its all out and use (driving) sometimes it will stop.
other wise its r&r driveshaft and replace the seal in the diff.
            check oil level.

other than that, you can get a small amout of weeping of the moly grease from the small ends of the dust boot of the c/v
this is nothing to worry about, always check your c/v boots for tears or pin holes from sticks.
either way its not a huge job to repair. compleate driveshafts are pretty cheap (aftermarket).
although i think you can beat the strenth of the genuine TOY ones.
I would consider overhauling genuine if i had a boot torn and found it pretty quick.

torn or damaged boots are not covered by warranty.
oil leak from the diff seal should be.
if you c/v is clicking, it is too late it is nakkered. off to repco for a new shaft with 5 yr 100,000k warranty

              Hi Big Dave n ####,
Yep your right, mines the same, but it,s stopped leaking ATM, spoke to Toyota, they just advised to keep an eye on it, mine should be covered under warranty, but he did hint that it may be due to after market susp lift

Another PERFECT example of Toyota blaming another mod for something.
Jeez they love blaming suspension for things. Id love to hear the explaination of that one.....hahaha......
That is the hint for when they hand you the Bill.
It is the mud that causes it. It is a 4x4 you get a bit of mud.......
Like i said it usually stops, rotation pushes the grit back out, as long as its not packed in there, thats why i suggest low pressure washout.

Positivly : Its because its a TOY that it stops, if it was a nissan you definately need to change the seal hahahaha.......

                  Are you serious!?

How does a suspension lift not affect the CV's?

Yep serious! Blame eveything on the nearest MOd.

This case at hand i think we are talking about an oil leak at the front diff not a c/v problem.

Further to an argumant if you wish standard suspension on a Prado 120 has the c/v and boots inverted (outer higher than the inner) which means more wear on the joint and the boot than level.
The correct lift will neutralize that, more lift will take it the opposite way, leaving it static about where it started as far as the angle goes.
Prados generally dont have a silly amount of angle at static height, which is a good thing.
