  • Central diff lock operation

Whilst on a trip last weekend I got bogged in mud which covered the front passenger wheel completely

Since I dont have the front diff locker (or rear for that matter) the other front wheel wasn't rotating obviously. Since I was in HL I would have thought at least one rear wheel would be turning but nothing was spinning. I have a GXL so no traction control or other electronic gizmos.

Can anyone explain how can I test the centre diff lock operation around town?

I had no chance to try LL as I was pulled out before I had a chance.

Was the centre diff accidentally disengaged (between HL and LL)?

No, I've engaged HL few kms before hand and it did take a llong time for the light to appear on the dash but it was definitely on. Can I put HL on the road and try gentle turning? Just enough to get the feeling that it is locked?

Yeah I've done that before without any issues. You will feel it straight away if its locked. Even if you lock it then turn left to right just idling along you will feel it grabbing. I locked mine when I was pulling some palm trees out to get better grip (11 of them) you should definately feel it. It should definately have been turning one front and one rear as you know with diff lock locked in either HL or LL ??? Maybe the lights coming on but nothing is actually locking ?? sounds that way. But try it out on the road first and see how you go.......Cheers Steve

          pjorek,
I would only do that on gravel or grass. But maybe I am a bit fussy.

Due to Greg's reply, I should have also said I wouldn't go running around the block with it in lock, but you should feel it straight away, literally within metres, eg by the time you pass your neighbours driveway you should feel it, not 200metres up the road......Thanks Greg for your reply as some people possibly dont know how far they could go with it locked. Gravel or grass is the best option but mentioned, one or two houses up the road wont kill it either........Cheers Steve

It did grip ok. I tried gentle turning on the road and no worries. It'd be hard to feel it on grass as there is enough slippage.
