  • Transmission Filter

I'm up for flushing my gearbox soon. Has anyone done a filter on the 5 speeds? Is it an easy job?

I've found an aftermarket filter on Ebay that comes with a rubber gasket. Is using a gasket ok compared to using sealant?

    Thanks,

The trouble with using sealant is some people put too much on so the excess squeezes out and you end up with chunks of it in the sump, i would just use the gasket.

Agree with Derek but I use the sealant as I find the cork gaskets seep over time. Just what I have experienced.....Cheers steve

The gasket in the picture appears to be a rubber basket. Will these weep over time? Last time I took a tranny pan off on another car the pan distorted. Sealing it was a pain in the A. The only way I could get it to seal was to use a cork gasket. The gasket wept with time.

A local tranny shop claimed they could straighten the pan and cut a rubber gasket to suit. My main concern is water being sucked in when driving through water hence the question of sealant vs gasket.

If a genuine tranny sump is reasonably priced, I might end up getting one and using sealant. I've asked a few times at service to have the filter and fluid replaced but keep getting "not required until 160 000km".

Has anyone that has changed the filter noticed significant debris in the filter? If it's not required, I'd rather save myself the hassle.

        Regards,

Just had my auto transmission flushed, filter changed and generally cleaned. I took "Patsy" to a transmission specialist but insisted they used Toyota WS fluid, gaskets and new filter. I also had them change the diff oils ad the transfer case.
The fluid that was drained from the gearbox was as black as. Absolutely filthy, after only 87000 Kms. Pics will follow.

When I approached Toyota, they said that the auto transmission is filled for life and unless there was a problem they would not touch it. I told then I had just purchased the vehicle and wanted a fluid change so I new everything was clean. The bloke I spoke to actually started to argue with me until I reminded him that I was the customer. Anyway I eventually found a specialist and had it all completed. They droped the pan, cleaned mannualy what they could and flushed a lit of new fluid. the filter was dirty but so was the oil. the dirty oil actually has a burnt clutch or electrical death type smell. Strange! Transmission appears to be a lot smoother in it's changes and especially when coming to a stop and taking off. Very happy with what they did. $500 for the complete job and excellent service.

Sorry for double post, not sure what has occurred.
