  • 2nd Start Button

Now I have searched and only found this topic discussed in both the 90 and 150 series but not the 120 but if anyone knows if it has been discussed in the 120 then happy to delete this one.

    Right onto the topic.

Went to used the 2nd Start button for the first time on the weekend and after pushing th button nothing happened. Refered to the manual to see if there should be a dash light and there should be one and the vehicle didn't start in 2nd gear.

My question is, has anyone had any issues with the 2nd Start button and if so how was it solved? Second part is does any one know how the button actually works? I know it makes the transmission start in second so does that mean it is an electronic thing meaning I might just have a loose connection on the switch.

Does the switch feel like it engages of is it just a case of seeing the light come up on the dash meaning it has done its work?

Hi VK, Cant really help you with the issue though Id check the fuse block first.
I do know the 2nd start button electronically shifts the gearbox into 2nd gear but you'll only just be able to feel it 'grab 2nd' at idle. Obviously when you get off the breaks the prado idles away slower than usual and that is a sign that it work.
    Good luck.
    Cheers
    Micheal.

But it does look like you have an issue with yours. Might have to check your electrical connections and fuses. Sorry can't be of further help.

Problem has now been fixed. The cable was not plugged into the back of the switch. The way the plug and switch connect with such a positive connection I would say it has never been connected.

The light now displays on the dash saying it is on but haven't tried to see it it actually engages second when driving. Something else to try on the tracks another day.

It sounded like a simple problem like that. After all its a Toyota, good to see its sorted.

Used the 2nd start button a few times in the last tip to City View Adventure Park. Great for when you need a bit less power and more torque and traction going up a slippery hill and then off as you head back down and need engine braking.

Found it was smooth transition between 1st and second using the button although it was a subtle change you could only just feel.

I use the second start to keep revs down and the change from first to second can be sudden. Also if I need first just move the gear lever over to first and back to second for a quick change.
