  • Lokka Automatic Diff Lock

Does anyone have any experience with the Lokka diff lock?

Seems like a great idea at a great price... But like they say... You get what you pay for.

    http://www.4wdsystems.com.au/html/lokka.htm

From reading a lot on PP it seems the standard LSD will only be good for 20,000 to 40,000kms before it loosens up. I'll be looking to go for a rear diff lock of some description in the near future and something automatic like this would be great if it worked and was reliable. I think the pricing comes in somewhere between $500 - $600.

    Crammy,

The biggest problem with most auto lockers is that thay have a tendancy to stay locked when under power (such as giving it some boot round a corner/roundabout) and produce a sudden onset of understeer.
I don't know how good the LOKKA is in this respect. The fact that I have an ARB air locker probably best explains my thoughts on Auto vs Air lockers.

I saw a bit about them on 4X4monthly.com.au forum. you may want to search that forum.
One guy there seemed a real wiz on them.
By memory.... there's a new generation one that controls the jerky action that they used to possess. soft lokka? I think it means they wont jump in and out like going round corners on the road. which used to cause handling issues.
Dont know about the underpower habit that Leachy mentioned.

They make sense on some fronts.

They are install and forget. No need for a compressor or a flick a switch.
As soon as they are needed they are there. and as soon as they are not needed any more they are off. they work on the fly. no air leak issues.

I have neither. but would love to have either...

        Hey Leachy,

        Yep that could get hairy!

I did a quick search on youtube and found a couple of hoons that have put them in a commode and foulcan... They're bloody noisy when turning. The noise would be enough to turn anyone off!

There's a fella on there with a hilux with them in and they appear to be very capable of road in regards to traction.

          Re: Lokka Automatic Diff Lock

I might be pushing the forum rules a but here as this is not a Prado question, but sitting next to our prado in the carport is my poor old 1996 IFS hilux. A few months ago I bought a 4wdsystems lokka for the front but have not gotten around to installing it yet. I pulled out the install instructions last night to have a look and contemplate this project and was shocked/scared at how brief the instructions for the Lokka seem to be.

Has anyone installed one of these things themselves before? Any tips, hints or traps for young players that you want to share would be appreciated.

          Cheers,

          Will

Don't stress, they are really easy to install. All you are doing is replacing the OE spider gear/LSD with the Lokka. There's not even any special tools required outside of the normal home mechanic's tool kit. I did one in a Surf last year and it was surprisingly easy.

When it's asembled you'll see they are actually an auto "Unlocker" that it they are locked in their normal position.

EDIT- one tip is to use a center punch to mark everything up so everything goes back together as it was!
