  • Re: Thump noise when stopping. (Tailshaft clunk)

Have mine booked in to get it checked out at the 10k next week. It was doing it consistantly every time I drove, probably once every 8-10 stop/starts. Once I had made the call to get it looked at, hasn't done it once. What are the chances they tell me there's nothing wrong with it? :?

    Cheers,
    AJ

      And another one...

At my 20K service, I mentioned the slight clunk noise in the tail shaft after I stop and start.

The end result, after their test-drive and attempts to fix it in-field, was to order a new tail shaft from Toyota. It's about 1 month away and covered under warranty.

I raised concerns about heading out 4WD'ing with this clunk and they mentioned that even with the clunk, it will be as dependable as ever. It's more about fixing what becomes a very annoying noise.

The thing that irks me is they'll always say they need it for a full day again, and then they'll probably just regrease it. :x
Update: I took the car back and the foreman took it for a test drive. He agreed that it was still crook, and said they'd "drop the tailshaft and linish the spline" or words to that effect. Returned the car a few days later and on picking it up, was told that they cleaned and regreased the spline  (apparently the foreman was off sick). Not happy Jan. But shock horror, it seems to be fixed now. Their theory is that even though it has been previously greased, there can still be air pockets, and the binding still occurs in the dry areas, hence, a full, thorough greasing is all that's required.

That was a week ago, and so far so good.

Took the Prado in for the 50K service today. Told them the bump was back. Guess what - another tail shaft he tells me. I said - you've already done that once. At which point he said - Oh I better talk th Toyota first then.

No probs said I - you can keep replacing it as many times as you like lol. Waiting to hear from them again now.

It was replaced a couple of weeks ago. My sense is that the auto is now changing gears a little more smoothly... i.e. the transition between gears (when under acceleration) feels a little smoother.

My son, on his "L-license", commented that he felt it was changing later, i.e. getting to higher revs before changing gear. I don't feel that myself, though his lead-foot is a bit heavier than mine. BTW, at the time, he didn't know I had it replaced, so his comment came as a result of feeling a slightly different driving characteristic.

Just wanted to share our impressions.

Ah well. Service manager has organised for yet another drive shaft to be fitted. Told me it would be "broken open" and a paticular area ground down before fitting. Some new fix that Toyota are trying. Interesting thing - he said they are starting to get quite a few 200 series with the same problem.

I was talking to a couple Prado owners the other week. Both had the clunk and thought it was normal. They were amazed when I showed them this thread. Both now have new tail shafts and are very happy !!!

ours went in for its 10K service (V6 auto) on Thursday. When I picked the car up I mentioned to the Toyota guy did they grease the shaft as per the servcie book as the tailshaft clunks. He said yes they did and wasn't aware of mine cluncking. I didn't report it as I read the service book tasks and thought I will see if that fixes it. He mentioned it is a known problem and if it persists let them know so they can replace it. Now my question is mine is a 11/08 build so onewould think it has the updated part and as this apparent issue is fairly old is there is an updated updated replacement shaft, is this the magic fix. It is not really a concern at the moment but if it persists I will give the dealership notice so maybe they pre-order a new unit before the next service which will be 6 months away. Mine clunks on stopping and starting, not all times though it depends on the force of the stop and rate of acceleration

I had the 40k service (Feb 08 D4D auto) done last week and mentioned the tailshaft thump which had gotten a little worse during the colder weather, I hadn't raised it before because it wasn't that bad. I expected a regrease and I would have been happy with that but was told a new tailshaft was required. Well that was fitted in double quick time this morning (thanks SciFleet Albion) and I have to say the difference is remarkable. I guess I had gotten used to the bumping. The first few lights I waited for the thump but it never came!

Glad - I read this thread...I have a 2009 with just over 3000km on it has a slight thud when stopping. It feels like someone has just tapped the rear bumper....I will keep an ear on it.

Be sure to mention it at your next service. In my case, once Toyota reproduced the problem in a test drive, the tail-shaft was replaced and it's been good ever since.
