  • Perth - 120 front and rear diff oil change

    Hi guys,

Just wondering if there would be anyone willing to show me the ropes in changing the front and rear diff oils in my diesel 120 series.
Have read a bit about stripping the hex plugs and being my first time replacing the diff oil, just want to be shown how to do it properly without stuffing it up.

I'm based NOR around Ozzy Park but more than happy to travel further north or a south.
I will supply all the oils and gaskets plus a few beers

Also is it worth chasing up some bolt head threads to replace the hex threads ?

    Cheers
    Matt

1st step is to drop into your Toyota dealer and get a new hex plug and crush washer for the front diff.
2nd step is to buy a high impact 1/2" drive 10mm allen key that is fairly short, a good breaker bar and an oil pump.
3rd step is to ensure you can get the filler plug open first.

I have searched high and low for a replacement hex plug to no avail. If you torque it up right, you should not need to destroy the plug the next time round.

        I Agree With Andrew

        Hey Mate,

Andrew is 100% right, replace both the washers minimum, I also replaced Plugs at the same time. (Costs about $21.00 initially and then you should only need the washers at about $6.00 there on), a filler pump (I used a a tom thumb available from super robbers -sorry supercheap - Love 20% off sale) and a torsion bar - See why Later.

To buy a good hex kit, I got it off Flea Bay with the link below.

        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/15pc-1-2-...6be3563&_uhb=1

It is quite an easy job, otherwise as long as you have not had "rattle gun monkey incorrectly torque the plugs". ( I ended up using a Hydraulic jack with the breaker bar to undo the buggers - aarghhh)

Also with the gear suggested or you already have, you should be also able to change the transfer, gear box (Manual) and rear diff oil with no problems - (Trust me new washers at min is the key). Also check the oil specs though or ask other Prado Pointers their opinions which oils they believe are best for each application.

I hope this helps a little and any further questions we are all here to help.

        Cheers

Mine front drain and rear filler plugs were stripped by Manduarah Toyota after we bought sencond hand. Ended up getting the rear off but had to send the car to autobahn cannington to remove the front plug. Gave them the new plug to fit and asked them to tighten by hand.... so we'll find out next year if they obliged :P

Changed oil in both diffs with out stripping the bolts, just give them a few taps with a hammer before hand and if they are really tight then it might pay to get a new bolts.
