  • Humming noise goes away when turning steering wheel

    Any thoughts on this?

Noise coming from what seems like left front. Grows louder the faster I'm going. If I quickly turn the wheel to the right, for that moment that the car is veering the noise goes away. Comes back again as soon as I'm heading straight again.

Bearings, maybe? I don't think it's power steering - no ongoing whining.

    Thanks for any input,
    Clive

    Are the wheel nuts tight?

I had similar noise when I picked up the car after the 80000km service. Took it back and service manager said the apprentice hadn't properly tightened the top intercooler and it was sucking air hence the noise.

      Cheers Jim.

        Hi Clive,

I had a humming noise - sounded like noisy tyres (which was odd for the highway terrains that were fitted). Noise went away only long left bank turn, hence why I finally realised there was something wrong as the car would go quieter (must have been the only time I didnt have the missus in the car yapping away ). Turned out to be right front wheel bearing.

It was early stages, hence why there was none of the classic whirring noise.

My guess is wheel bearings, jack the front up and check the wheels for up and down play.

Thanks everyone - mechanic concurs that it's most likely the bearings; he'll know when he pulls it apart. So, have ordered new bearings. Somewhat surprised (don't know if I should be) that a Landcruiser's bearings would fail at 190k km. Maybe it's driving on all the cobblestones and tram lines here in Prague, because I certainly don't do off-roading.... 190k sound reasonable to anyone?

I'd be OK with replacing wheel bearings at 190k km. That's a lot of km for those little bearings to go for when you think about it. Then again, I'm not all that mechanical either?

hahaha, 190k is pretty normal for any vehicle.

My RHS front went at 90k, but my vehicle was ex mining so could be expected. No, cobblestones / tram lines wouldnt help.

Ah, but you see I thought that a Toyota Landcruiser wasn't just "any vehicle"... .

Just to wrap this up, it was indeed the wheel bearings - replaced both of them in front, all good now.
